I was driving in the alley behind my house so i can park it in my yard i was doing about 25 in the alley when i hit a bump and made the battery bracket touch positive i guess it shorted the car and now it wont start. This happend to me before but it was b/c of my tach there is a nob that limits the rpm and one of the kids turned it all the way down causing the car not to start. i knew i had to change the timing chain before i bought the car but i didnt think it would be this soon, that really the problem everytime i start it cranks over and dies one time it backfired really bad and flames came out the throttle body probably just the carb fluid i sprayed ? so any suggestions would help plz and thank you.

 

I had this happen to me too, but something came loose in my engine compartment and shorted the battery to ground. Killed the truck.
I had to replace a couple of fuses and "reset" a breaker. The breaker was a little removable fuse looking thing with a hole in the middle that you push a paper clip through and it resets it.

The guys at the dealer looked at me like an idiot when I told them I needed a new one and they were like "did you reset it?".

Actually, it does soud like you jumped time now that I read your post completely.

That's exactly when happened to me a few months ago. I hit a curb and drove the truck like 10 more feet and turned it off. When I went to crank it back up it pulled a broken piece of the timing guide through the gears and jumped time, cracked the timing cover, and bent all 4 intake valves...

I'd pull the valve cover and look down in the front of the engine to see if the drivers side plastic rail is broken off.

And it wouldn't hurt to check all the fuses under the hood, but I doubt that't the problem...

Yep.
Just pop the valve cover off and look down the timing chain guides. Might need a flashlight, but check down there and see what you got going on.

 

the mechanic said its definitly a timing chain b/c of the way it jumps so i guess i
have to change it is that the average life span of a chain on a 22re ? also how much am i looking at

 

Assuming you didn't bend any valves or crack the timing cover you can do it yourself for about $60-100.

Put it in the shop though and you're looking at $1500.

It's also a 14.5 hour job by the mechanics workbook, but it took me about 40 to do mine.

There is an excellent thread going right now with lots of pics of what you're looking at. I suggest you read it from the first post and learn as much as you can.

 

if it was the ecu how can find out if its good or bad

 

I'm sure they can be tested, but usually when all else fails to fix the problem you just swap it for a new one and if it was bad the problem disappears.

 

Do the timing chain yourself, It's not as hard as you might think and it will only cost you 60 bucks
