Well for me I have 2 1973 Landcruiser FJ-40s and one 1994 4Runner. But as far as a 4Runner over a 80 series TLC I am certain it would be for a number of reasons. First and foremost must be the cost associated with the two. Availability for parts on the 4Runners is 10:1.

Then possibly fuel mileage? The I-6 TLC engines are going to get about the same MPG as your Z71.

But if you want the coolness factor the TLC is the way to go. They are very nice riding vehicles (I think) and trail worthy. Best of all you get the solid front axle.

I have a 99 runner and a 00 runner. I like the 80 series, but prefer the size of the 1st - 3rd gen 4runner. LC 80 is pretty big for my taste. My family just isn't large enough to have one.

me too - i can't justify having my primary vehicle as an auto. however, what i'm working on is replacing the wife's '87 saab with an FJ80. that way she can have the auto, but i'll still get to mod it and it'll be more comfortable to take to moab than my 4runner. i just need to set up the mods such that they aren't noticable. i was able to slowly over the course of 2 years lift my 4runner about 2-3" without her noticing. the key is to do it slowly and when she complains about how it's now harder to get into, just tell her that she's not remembering right

I love my 80 series, the only thing a 4r has on it, for my purposes, is better gas mileage, but the approximate 3mpg difference between my 93 4r and my 80 series is negligible for me. Replacement parts for the 80 are widely available and comparably priced to other Toyota parts. There are more and more high quality aftermarket mods available, just about anything you want. And of course, if you look for one you can get a front/rear/center diff locked 80 series, all for $6-12k.

Size and price. An FJ80 would be WAY too big for the trails around here - you'd have no paint left!

I saw a red '93 FJ80 on a local lot, and went in to see what they wanted - $10,900! Without the lockers! My '93 4Runner (same color actually) was $3000.

wow, i'm glad this thread is out there. i'm tired of my 91 runner due to my buddies fj out doing me this past weekend. i want something new so naturally i've been checking out the land cruiser 1991-1998.....well the 91's have almost 200k miles on them and go for almost 5k as the 1998 has 100k miles and goes for 14-16k.

they have solid axel, no lockers, 7 passangers and about 212 horse power.
and a very wide truck with wide axels

so i started looking at the discovery 1994-1998 these are awsome
they go from 3600-7000k real nice, 7 passanger, dual sunroofs, rear AC controls, tow package, 182 horse power V8, less torque than the LC but a much faster quarter mile time.

bottom line the discovery is a nice truck, i'm looking at getting one next weekend and i will post pictures. only because of yotatech i will keep my 91 4runner, i see no sence in getting 3k if i sell it. it could be a spare car or trail rig...

what do you guys think

Hope you're a 12V electrician...The English just figured out how to make an automotive electrical system in the past few years (basically since being bought by BMW LOL)

check this out also, they are less problematic and are cheeper to fix

LC
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/re...Land%20Cruiser

discovery
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/re...odel=Discovery

so the rateing on the discovery is worse but it look as though it's much easier parts to fix. plus with the 5-7k i save getting the discovery thats can pay for the parts plus get me an ARB bumper and winch, or some dirt bikes

Get a 93-95 LC for $6-9k, or 91-92 for $5-7k (98 is first year of current generation 100 series). The first gen Disco (that you are looking at) have horrible reliability ratings, newer are slightly better. Parts prices for the LC are the same as for your 4r, probably cheaper than LR parts. 93-97 do have optional front/rear diff locks, all 80 series have a center diff lock standard. There is a reason used Discos are cheap.

I was really close to getting a 97 cruiser instead of my 97 runner. The cruiser was even cheaper. The two things that stopped me.

1) mileage
2) my garage barely fits the 4runner.

I have a 4runner, my dad has a 80 series cruiser. I love em both. I just wish I could wheel the cruiser. It doesn't have F/R lockers, but I'm sure if we ever got around to it we could buy them and get em put in. First thing's first though, lift and tires.

Well, when I bought mine, I wanted an '00 or better, and I don't like the way the new LCs look(too much like a van IMO), that and I heard they were slower, got worse gas mileage, and couldnt be had without leather. The 4runner had more of what I wanted(cloth, hood scoop, more clearence, quicker), and was much less expensive. Now if I was going to do an older LC, it probably would have been a different story, but I like to keep my whips(cars for all you non-Jersians) 2000 or better, too many headaches with older cars.
