Jasper 4 cylinder engine vs. Orient engine.....why the price difference?

Ok, here we go again!! How the heck I've gone from "just replacing the camshaft" to "let's just replace everything" is beyond me!!!

Anyway, as a previous post stated (and a few other ones), I need a new cylinder head for my 89 4runner. But since I'm "going in", I figure I might as well replace the timing chain, timing chain guides and cover, water pump, oil pump, drop the oil pan. Man, I'm really making a lot of work for myself here.

Anyway, here's my question: Why is the Jasper engine around 2300 bucks while the Orient engines are around 1400?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I've got $1040 so far in my "4runner fund", so I'm not that far away from just getting another engine that already has all the stuff replaced that I want replaced.

Your help, as always, is appreciated.

it's all in the name. jasper is a reputable company with a great warranty and they have been around for a long time. not many people are willing to shell out the doe though. that's why you don't hear much about them around here. the 22r series motors are just too simple to work on for most people that still own them. for the others that want to just replace them, the other companies like orient are a whole lot cheaper.
i think i got that right. any other opinions?

You can rebuild the engine for aprox. $600.00 including machine work. Check "Engnbldr.com" for the parts.

Well, my truck definately needs a new cylinder head since the middle camshaft support is galled. So, I would have close to $500 in a new cylinder head and camshaft from them. Add in the timing chain stuff, water pump, oil pump, etc., and I'm starting to come close to the $1400 that Orient wants for one of their rebuilds.

HELLOOOO, Check Engnbldr.com! For $219.00 the Master Rebuild Kit includes everything but the head, cam and water pump. You can buy a used cam for $20.00, head for under $50.00 ($125.00 for complete engine) at my local salvage yard and have it rebuilt. I, stay away from rebuilt engines since I, don't trust anyone's work but my own. Shop around you can do it for a lower price than $1400.00. I, would think closer to $800.00.

$50 for a used head is kind of a stretch isn't it?

There are way too many variables for you to assume he can get a good head for that.

Also, orient offers a 3 year unlimited milage warranty on their engines. How can you expect to match that doing it yourself?

If it's a hobby I would redo it myself. If its a daily driver I'd pay to have a warranty. There are also time and ability constraints to consider as well.

What works for one is not necesarrily an option for all.

i lucked out and bought a head from member pattycakes77 on here for 66 bucks shipped and it is in great shape. it is possible, but if time is an issue chances are pretty slim that you will come accross a deal like that.

50.00 for a head is not a stretch. I've found them for 20.00.
