Everything slows down during a spike (page loading, streaming video, scrolling, typing, smilie animation) and not just in firefox, it's system wide.

I can't figure it out.

It might be due to an extension, or plugin (Java comes to mind). Try FF in safe mode and see what happens. If it runs safe, then try to track down the extension or plugin and either re-install it or remove it.

firefox is hogging your system. i dont use firefox much, but if you have an older version there is a memory leak problem. if you have 1.5 or higher then the problems lie elsewhere.

I feel like an idiot now... 3 out of the 4 extensions I use needed updates...:smack:

How do I keep Firefox, or any other program, from hogging resources?

I use spybot,HiJackThis and spysweeper. They all clean some things...none of them get everything. Try one of the others...If you need help with Hijackthis save the scan to a text and place it here...

Like Clin mentioned, older versions have memory issues. Are you using 1.5?

Hey Chris... Install this:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html

It'll show you a ton of information about an app, including open files and I/O specifics. It may help to narrow down which extension is doing this or if it's FF itself.

You can set it up as a replacement for Task Manager (it's a menu option) so it's handy to get to when it happens.

What's your plugin list look like? Does this happen on a regular basis or is it random? How long does the "event" last for?

Just pull the EXE out of the zip file and drop it in a folder somewhere. Run it, then click Options | Replace Task Manager.

I think it defaults to showing the "lower pane" but if not, then View | Show Lower Pane.

When the event happens, hit CTRL_SHIFT_ESC (hold each one until you've pressed all three) to bring up Tsk Manager (which is now this app) then click File | Save As.

Enter a file name, and check out the fun. Post up the text file here as an attachment if yoou'd like.

When it comes to this stuff, that's never a bad thing.
