Finally took some pics of my highlift install I did back in December. Basically, it rests on the Thule bars and then is bolted to my surco. Cost was $1.63 in 2 bolts, 2 nuts, and 4 big fat washers. It takes about 5 mins to get it off, but I so rarely use it...so I figured save the money and go the cheap route. I also installed a CB, so you can see my Firstick bolted to my ARB. I also recently took off the chrome fender liners. Looks a little more beefy, but I think I need bigger tires now

Nice looking truck, But I still do not trust the bolts thru the Surco rack idea.. Just the amount of bending that rack has when I use it to pull my slef up onto the tire makes me nervous... That is a lot of weight on that flimsy little rack.. It is a shame you drilled the holes, the 4x4 rack fits perfectly with Thule bars and the Surco..

Keep an eye on it, it will start to rip the rack apart by the rivets that hold it togather..

 

Bah! I just ran into a guy who has had it like it for 4 years on his blazer, "works great". You must realize that the weight is on the Thule load bars. I used some very large washers and pinched the Surco bars...not the flimsy flat pannels. I looked at it yesterday real close when I took the shots...no damage after 3 months.

Ive had this rack for 3 years now...its still in perfect shape. I beat the hell out of it 5 times a year moving large boxes and plastic tubs. If it breaks now because of this, Id be damn surprised. But if it does, I eat my words nicely

Does anyone ever lock this stuff up? I would be really worried about theft.

 

Lock what up? The roof rack? Ive got motion sensors all over the place and a pager alarm. My alarm will start ringing as soon as you attempt to pull it off and you'll find me running after you. But yeah someone could steal the whole thing with a bit of ease if they were tall enough and no one bothered to walk by when my alarm goes off and Im out of range to reciece the page...

 

That's putting way too much trust in today's society if you ask me.

Not the rack, the highlift, and your spare tire. What about those?

 

Lol...its quite the pain in the ass to get that highlift off without a 3 foot step stool. You also have to have the right size sockets to losen the bolts. PITA otherwise. As far as the spare...its a 265 and Im running 285s...so its pretty much useless. Basically up there for looks. Once again though, my truck is pretty damn high up. Its damn hard to get anything off it without a step stool.

I am very trusting of our society though. Ive had all that electronics in there for 4 years...I am yet to have a break in. I live in a very nice apartment complex that has good security...cant do much else except make sure the jerk that steals your stuff has to WORK for it Good luck to the guy who tries to get my stereo out

 

My alarm is sensitive enough that when you remove the Hi-Lift, it will set off my alarm due to the fact you have to wiggle it off of the mounts.

I always leave the drivers door open or turn off the alarm when working on the roof.

 

Yep.. mine has 2 pad locks on it... I would not for a spare tire, but I also don't keep a new spare tire on a good rim.. Mine is a crusty old rim with a spare with about 5/32th left on it.. Maybe if I buy a new 32" I may.. But it is only on there if I am wheeling it..

 

Yeah, good luck on trying to rip off anything on Poboy's truck. Its sensitive enough that I get my kicks by backing up to it with my 5.9 and letting it rumble and to set it off. Good times, good times!

you should try disconnecting your exhaust at the cat. It sounds SOOOO GOOD. Like a stock car. Not good to keep, but just to hear. I helped my buddy put a new exhaust on his 5.3L and it was insane! Had to drive around with it a little. Now THAT would set it off accross the parking lot

PoBoy, Love the truck! But I couldn't get away with that here in savannah. I already have tons of scratches on my roof from people trying to rip my rack off (everything is locked down)
