As you can see by my avitar, I've got a brush guard on the front of my truck and a set of Piaa lamps. Neither the brush guard or the lamps are particularly easy to take off, although I can do it if I have to. I just don't want to. I'd like to install a transmission cooler, and was curious if it can be done without removing the brush guard and the front grill? Can it just be zip-tied to the radiator from underneath the truck? I thought there was a writeup in the tech section, but I could not find it.

Also, I know alot of ya'll have used the Hayden tranny coolers. Do you like them and if so, what model would you recommend? I won't be doing any really heavy towing. I'd just like to put one on my truck for added protection for the transmission. Thanks guys.

Those have some cool features (pardon the pun), but any "stacked plate" cooler will work well.

 

It would be extremely difficult to do w/o taking off the brush guard and grill. There's not a lot of room between the grill and the radiator so unless you have small hands and a ton of light, I would recommend taking them off.

I have the 1678 IIRC and it works fine. To be honest, you're never going to know whether it helps or not unless you have a temp guage to monitor the temps. I did it just for "insurance" purposes as it's a small cost if it does extend the life of the auto tranny. I don't tow but I do drive in pretty excessive heat during the summers.

 

I'd really like to do it, but the thought of pulling off those lamps and that brush guard off makes me cringe. The mounting brackets on the brush guard ain't exactly easy to get to, and the way the Piaa lamps attach to it makes them difficult to remove as well.

I'll have to think about it. It would be a definite worthwhile mod if I want to invest the time to do it. What model number Hayden do most people use? If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Hayden make the coolers for TRD? Thanks guys.

Hayden Tranny Cooler Model # 1678 is what I used. I don't think you are going to find it locally, but you can check. There is a post by midiwall on here somewhere I think about where he ordered it online, where I got mine as well. I don't think you gotta get that one, but something comparable...but you should be able to find something that will work in Bham. Drive over here, I'll help ya do it.

 

Ditto. 1678 for me and I bought in online for about $60 shipped.

 

I've seen Hayden coolers at Pepboys. Autozone can get them pretty fast too. You will get better prices online though.

Anyways, I just ordered the hayden 677 off of ebay for $50 shipped. I chose the 677 after measuring the plate cooler that toyota is putting on the V8 sequoias and 4th gen runners. The oem one is 6x10 inches and the 677 is 5.5x11". I'll let you know how it fits.

 

I got the same one as well. Either the 1677 or the 1678 will provide plenty of cooling for you.
