When I tried to do this, I tried to search and I couldn't find very much information on it. This was after I had bought the shift knob though. I decided to go to the dealer to check if I needed a specific piece to get the shifter to work and yep. So I got all the pieces today and here it is. $7 for the shift knob from ebay and $3.70 for the adaptor piece that screws onto the shifter. Heres a picture of the "new" parts. Excuse the quality of the pictures because I used my phone to take them.

However, there is a slight problem. You can see some of the metal from the shifter column. I have to talk to my friend on how he did this mod on his truck. Maybe I can do a write up if anyone needs it. I like this shifter more than the T-shifter that came with the truck originally.

 

Seems like that shifter would be lesss comfortable to rest a hand on than the T handle. If I had a 3rd gen, I'd be more interested in a reversal of this mod for my 4wd.

 

Haha...I'm sure it works both ways. I like each for their own attributes. The 4wd just looks better in my opinion. I can swap back whenever I want though. I'll see how it goes for now.

Your right it is not as comfortable, it's one of the few things I don't like about my 01. I didn't realise 2wd's had a different shifter.

 

^ yea its kind of bigger and wider....covers up more of your palm.

 

Does anything need to be done with the white wires from the original shifter. I remember a while back I went to the Junkyard to buy a 4x4 shifter but the wires tore when the guy took it off so I didnt buy it thinking it was busted.

 

Those wires are for the o/d. I don't have them hooked up at the moment. I just have a wire hanging from my console...so whenever I want o/d off I just press them together with my fingers. Anyway...I've been driving like that for years. I had a razo shift knob before and then put the T-shift knob back after selling it because the chrome just looked too ricey for me.

 

So, for those that have replaced their T-handle with the 4wd version, does anyone want to sell their T-handle? If so, just give me an email. (my email address is linked to my user name).

Sorry to hijack, but I figure it might be of interest to those that posted on this thread.

 

It appears that the 2wd shifter is longer than the 4wd shifter (the metal part not including the rubber grip).

When I looked at mine, there was less than 2 inches from the rubber grip to the shifter base. It looks like you have more than double that.

Maybe your friend changed more than just the rubber grip and changed the metal part of the handle also. Or he cut off the extra length before putting the new grip on??

I like the pistle grip sorta feel of the 4wd handle. I don't really rest my hand on it alot i hold onto it like it's an accualy shifter. I had a stick shift before my 4runner, so i am used to like holding onto the shifter while driving.

 

i have always like the shifters in the 4wd yota's more than the 2wd, as for resting my hand, i just rest it on the 4wd selector stick, little lower and gives me a nice grip

 

i used to want to do this, but i dont like how high it sits on it, baybe if it were shorter.

 

Problem is, the shifter is too high because the 2wd column is diff from the 4wd. I known people that have trimmed the shifter column but I'm not sure on how to do it and he hasn't told me how he did his. Still in the dark for now.
