It's been 60K and not sure if it has been done yet, so I'm going to attempt it myself. However, I want to know if you guys use the different types of grease recomended for the different parts (NLGI #2 Lithium Base Chassis Grease for the u-joints and NLGI#2 Molybdenum Disulfide Lithium Base chassis Grease for the yoke and double cardan joint)? Also, is it necessary to have a gun with a flexable hose or can I buy the cheap one at WalMart? Any other tips would also be greatly appreciated.

 

flexible hose would be very useful and so would a pistol grip. Most of the time you will need one hand to hold the nozzle and the other to pump the gun. i used synthetic stuff. for both applications. i didnt feel it was necessary for NLGI #2 Lithium Base Chassis Grease so instead i used the synthetic NLGI#2 Molybdenum Disulfide Lithium Base chassis grease.

 

Toyota used to specify NGLI-2 grease with Moly disulfide for the slip yokes and plain NGLI-2 for the u-joints. I've used a Valvoline synthetic NGLI-2 with moly disulfide for years on everything and it has performed well.

I use a standard gun with a rigid tip. I find I have to jack up the truck and leave it in neutral so I can rotate the driveshafts to expose the Zerk fittings.

60K miles and this is your first grease job????? It's supposed to be done at each oil change. If I let mine go much longer than 6K miles, the slip yokes begin to bind and I hear the dreaded "clunk" when I stop.

 

I think it was every 30K in the manual. Sometimes when I stop then release the break to go I hear a clunk. Not too loud thought it was normal. Does it matter if I don't drive it hard or off road?
Also, can I purchase this grease anywhere? Thnks

Prerunners don't have zerks and therefore are not servicable--you couldn't grease it if you wanted too.

 

Isn't prerunner the same as the 4wheel except for the front drive train? I just looked undrneth and saw some zerks, well I'm not sure what I'm really looking at but they sure look like zerks from what I've seen on the net. I'll check tomorrow again because I already bought the gun and grease (valvoline synthetic).

 

I am fairly sure that they have non-servicable u-joints but correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I've haven't looked under my truck recently, but I'm pretty sure there are zerk fittings where the u-joint is... isn't there ?

 

Currently I have Amsoil Synthetic NLGI #1 (dont know why i got #1) I am going to start using this HD Amsoil NLGI #2

I hit mine with grease after every wheeling trip and about every 5K, just one squirt in the joints, and 3 or 4 in the slip joint... On the wifes runner I only do it every 15K or so, but it doesnt get as dirty

You're wrong.... I just got done greasing the axle and u-joints on my 2002 PreRunner. The zerks are there.

 

You guys wait that long to lube? Heck I do mine every 3,000 miles. I don't care what the manual says, going 30k isn't good. Maybe that is why all of my family Toyota's have the original joints still in them. Idler arms don't count!

I stand corrected. My buddy told me his has no zerks.Maybe he was high, or thinking of the front end. Anyway, I do mine every oil change.

 

I started using the mobil1 grease for both applications. So far so good. Owning two grease guns just did not sound appealing to me.

 

Haven't done the job yet but was wondering what else can I use the grease and gun for since I already bought it? I'm assuming that that tube of grease is more than enough. Seems like a waste just to use it on the u-joints.

 

Just got mine done with the valvoline synthetic stuff. I don't beleive I've never done this before, it was so easy. Oh yeah, a flexible hose, IMO is a must. It was also easier because I had my bro under the truck with me. It also took a few pumps before any grease came out of the joints.
I used to pay for all these services (not sure if this one was ever done), but with some reasearch and this site most maintainance can be done in my own garage by me and some help from my bro. I did an oil change for the first time in my life a few months back because it was overdue and couldn't get an appt at goodyear. Changed My own plugs after toyota said they were going to charge me $140 (ridiculous). And just install 4 monomax shocks 2weeks ago. The struts might have been worth taking to a shop to have mounted to the spring though. Next is coolent.
