Getting correct ID3 tags on MP3's

I have a bunch of MP3's that I ripped a long time ago using an old program. The problem is, the program didn't save the MP3's with ID3 tags, and I'm trying to get them all organized with the proper tags. I've been looking for a tool that'll pull the tags from somewhere online, and load them to the specific song(s). Such as, I'd point it to the right information from an online database, and it'd load automatically. I found one that'll let me do batch editing manually, but I'm trying to save time. Any info is appreciated.

iTunes and CDDB perhaps. If you have the correct song names it should work; I've had instances where it would work for some, and then wouldnt work for others.

Hey Chris, I just caught this thread...

The problem with what you're looking to do is that there's (generally) no way to absolutely identify the track for lookup. There are way too many variables involved to look at it programatically (bitrate, sample rate, sample depth, encoding method, etc).

Now, I've seen some "attempts" at being able to programatically "listen" to the track and identify it, but the success rate is pretty low.

The lookup services like Gracenote (aka CDDB) and others use ID methods based on the complete original CD to be able to find the info for the original tracks. If that's not around, you're kinda' sunk in their case.

btw.. If you'd like to try a different bulk editor, Media Player will let you do it an album at a time
  • Open media Player
  • Go to LIBRARY
  • In the LEFT panel (not the middle) navigate to the ALBUM (not just artist) in question
  • RIGHT CLICK, pick UPDATE ALBUM INFO
  • In the lower center panel, you're being asked if this is correct. If so, click FINISH.
  • Media Player will rewrite the ID3 tags
  • To edit the info, move to the top half of the center panel
  • Single click on any track
  • Pick ALL the tracks in the album (hit CTRL-A)
  • RIGHT CLICK, pick ADVANCED TAG EDITOR
  • By navigating that dialog, you can edit the track info in bulk or individually
