i'm seriously thinking about purchasing a bone stock 2wd 22re pickup to deliver pizza in and to serve as a backup rig/gas saver.

i've searched and i found TONS of information for the 4wd 22re pickups with larger tires and such, but not a whole lot for the 2wd's.

so...... all you 2wd guys out there... help a guy out! what sort of a mileage can i except in a completly bone stock 2wd 22re pickup?

i've also heard that the old 20r engines were cheap and easy to maintain. any thoughts? i'm not sure if they would be good for my application as delivering pizza requires constant stop and go driving and i think a newer fuel injected engine would be better for that sort of thing. besides, with a truck that old who knows what else is wrong with it? i just think it would be fun to build up one of those old 20r pickups

i don't know how much more or less efficient the 22RE is than the 22R in a 2wd pickup, but my '84 with a 22R and 4 speed got somewhere close to 30mpg on the freeway.

i wouldn't recommend the 20R if you're looking for mileage -- they always seem to get mileage in the teens and usually never run totally right for some reason(probably the primitive rats nest of late 70s smog garbage)

i'm seeing lots of 2wd pickups with 4 speed and 5 speed trannys. this might sound like a dumb question but is there really any difference between the two other than one has a 5th gear and the other doesn't? haha i'm more of a 4x4 guy so i don't know much about the little 2wds!!

 

that is the only difference -- and the 4 speeds usually have really high rear end gears to make up for it. but it's no big deal when you're so low to the ground and light. my 4 speed 2wd could probably have outrun either of my 4x4s.

the 5 speed is nice if you do a lot of freeway cruising, though.

 

would you happen to know the exact rear end gear ratios? which tranny do the 2wd prerunner guys prefer? thanks alot! -alan

92 22re 2wd 5 speed

 

most 5 speed 2wds had 3.42, 3.54(or 3.58), or 3.73 gears in the rear end. 1 tons were available with 4.10s or 4.30s, and 4 speeds typically had 3.08s.

probably the strongest 2wd tranny(other than the turbo R151F) is the W56 used in the 1 tons. the W55 is the more common tranny and isn't too bad. there's also the G40 and W46 4 speeds out there too.

 

okay, i know the w56 is also in the 4x4's because i used to have a 1st gen 4runner. is there another thread out there with all this information in it? i can't seem to find anything concrete anywhere.

if i do end up getting a little 2wd, i just want to know what to look for is all

 

2wd 5speed with camper.. 33+ highway but only 22 strickly on short trips in town. 48K on truck.

 

My daily ride is my 86 1 ton with 4:30 gear 5 speed tranny 22re with Engnbldr 268 cam rest of the engine stock no headers stock muffler.I get
26 mpg and my tires and rims is stock size 195/75/14" wheels.
