When I start my truck it idles rough, puffs black smoke, and when driving if I accelerate and let off the gas it backfires. Once the truck warms up good it runs great, except it still puffs smoke when you rev up the engine, it also drinks gas like water. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Sounds like a bad float valve or a stuck choke to me.

How are your spark plugs? Timing?

 

The choke seems to be working, plugs and plug wires are new. How do you check the float valve.

 

you're obviously running way rich from the black smoke and backfiring. could be a sign of an AAP that is worn out on the carburetor, or a sunk float.
