I think this has been mentioned before. But has anyone really looked at how the 22RE in the 88-4R gets it air? It's trying to suck air thru the left headlight into the airbox. I bet you could get another 10HP out of the 22RE if you removed the left headlight leaving a big hole there to let some air in.

With that in mind, I was thinking about removing the shroud around the airbox inlet and just letting the thing draw air from under the hood. Can't be much worse than using the headlight for a cork. The other option seems to be boring a big hole in the inner fender and drawing air from the empty area inside the fender in front of the wheel well. I just dont want to do anything that is going to get water in the intake.

Ideas?

 

if you have the stock intake box then do the deck plate mod and you will be fine

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I was taking out the air box...lol...it was unreal....couldn't believe any air at all was getting in there.

I took the box out and just put in a stand alone cone filter in. Seemed to help.

 

I would do the deckplate mod and leave the front tube there. I took the tube out on my old runner (funny since my runner was newer than my truck)...and with the ARB bumper water could find its way thru the cracks into the airbox very easily.

I plan to do a deckplate as soon as I get back to my truck.

 

I didn't pay much attention to it until today, and the only reason I noticed it now was because I was cleaning and repainting the engine bay and had the airbox out. When I went to put it back in, I couldn't believe how restrictive the factory setup is. Toyota really dropped the ball on this one. It's a seriously retarded design.

I'm going to have to think about this one for a bit. Not sure what I want to do about it, but something needs to be done. Maybe a hood scoop? Haha, a 22RE with a hood scoop.

 

it's really not that bad, considering some other designs out there. ever seen a 20R? they have the big 13" or so air cleaner...and the inlet tube is about 1/2" tall by 3" wide. same goes for a lot of V8 engines as well.

the main purpose is to make these engines quiet. quiet engines sell cars.
