Hey everybody

I have a 92 4runner with a340h auto tranny. I've had dilemmas with the A/t oil temp light when in overdrive on the highway @ times. I just noticed that the fluid lines from and back to the transmission go through the tranny cooler only and not the radiator first. Could this be the reason for my problem or does it matter? I bought the rig last year and am just now starting to learn everything I can about it. Thanks in advance.

 

So, does that mean you have an aftermarket tranny cooler? And the fluid is running though it only, and not through the bottom of the radiator?

 

that's correct. I find only 2 lines going back to the tranny and both are hooked to the aftermarket tranny cooler. I can also see the two points @ the bottom of the radiator that I think the lines originally went to.

 

Yep, the two points you see at the bottom of the radiator are where the lines used to be. If it were my rig, I would have the fluid flowing through both - the aftermarket cooler and the radiator.

 

thanks for the input, do you think that could be my problem with running hot. Also, which lines do I run where? Should it go from the tranny through the passenger side of the radiator first then out to aux then back or through driver side first?

 

Yes, that is probably the problem. As for the plumbing, I can't remember which side of the radiator is the 'intake'. I doubt it really matters... but I could be wrong. Hopefully someone who has recently done a flush will chime in.

 

thanks so much cl, your input may have saved a mechanical idiot from spending too much money on a rebuild or something when all I may need is just some hose and some clamps to do the job right

I'll have to check and see how mine goes. I added a cooler in addition to the radiator circulation, but that was several years ago. If no one else answers first, I'll look at it when I leave work tonight and post a reply.

Update: I've purchase some tranny cooler hose and configured the plumbing, I took it for about a 40 mile test drive @ speeds of 75-80 and everything seemed to be working great. No "a/t oil temp" light and no smokin' hot tranny hump inside. I was pretty stoked about that. However, after checking the tech section I believe I have it going through the radiator backwards + I think it is going through the aux cooler first. Does it matter?

 

I think the driver side it the return line. Technically the aux. trans cooler should be attached to this side to maximize cooling of the fluid. However, I don't think there are any detrimental effects to hooking it up "backwards".
