I just got done replacing the oring on my oil cooler. It was leaving quite a pubble of oil on the driveway. The oring cost about $6. It took about 2 hours. I jacked up the front end and took off the drivers side tire. Put a jack stand under the frame by the drivers door. I was able to unhook the bottom hose by reaching up underneath behind the engine. I could not get the top hose loose due to old age and it was stuck on the fitting. So I loosened the center bolt with a cresent and remove the oil cooler from the block. I was then able to bend the hose back and work a screwdriver inbetween the metal tube and old hose from underneath again. Got it cleaned up put some grease back on the new oring and tightened the bolt with a 10"cresent. I would have liked to have torqued it but could not get the wrench up there. A test drive showed no leaks. Keep my fingers crossed. It is not that big of a job for those of you thinking about doing it. The oring is a buy from the dealer.

I bought the O-rings about a month ago, and haven't installed them yet. In preparation for the job, I cleaned around the cooler and oilpan really well with Gunk. It was so clean, that I thought that I would leave it be, and confirm exactly where the oil was coming from before I took the time to do the O-ring replacement. To date, I have no fresh oil drips/seepage. I guess all the buildup was from unscrewing the oil filter. I guess the ol' 3.0 is burning it. Time to change to 10w-40 I guess.

 

there are 2 seals on the oil cooler.

an o-ring thingie on the huge like 28 mm nut and a weird looking gasket/oring thingie between the cooler and the block.

I bought both as the seal in the back was leaking on mine. but in the process now the oring is leaking in the front (just not as bad) <grrrrrr> I think i forgot to take the OLD oring off the bolt before i put the new on one.....



i used a socket on an extension and an impact to run the nut off. i didnt want to risk rounding it off...

 

I did not know about the seal around the bolt untill I got home. So far the old one is holding up.
