87 4Runner Turbo 22RTE(2.4L I4) auto 4wd
235,000 miles, and runs perfect! Its in great shape for a '87 too. minor rust on the fenders that I will clean up in the next few weeks. I don't see any holes, but if so I will look into some aftermarket fenders. Truck already has K&N cone filter, boost gauge and mbc. I just drove it home 3 hrs in a blizzard and it preformed above my expectations. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Planning to do a 3 inch turbo back custom exhaust with a high flow cat, rip out the a/c(doesn't work), fab up an intercooler setup - most likely use a stock mr2t core, and get a head unit in it. Then I'll throw it on the dyno to get some #'s and be sure its running good. Also would like to update the suspension, the rear has blocks because these are known for rear sag. After that who knows.

questions/comments/critisisms/suggestions welcome. What do you guys think about taking the stipes off? I can't decide. I'm also not feeling the aftermarket rear bumper.

Anyone know what stock boost is?

Also the rear gate doesn't open, window doesn't go down, and defrost doesn't work. Kinda wierd that all those problems are related to the rear door and window.

 

I like it! Where'd you find it? Most here won't like the auto transmission but you get what you can get sometimes (I have an auto tranny as well )

Yours is the same color scheme as mine, I vote for leaving the factory stripes, I didn't like mine at first but they have grown on me and I wouldn't take them off anymore, its kind of a neat retro thing for me.

Obviously you've figured out that the rear window can have issues, you can't get the gate down because you can't get the window down. Do a search here and there is a lot of information on back window issues.

Roger is the master of 1st Generation 4Runners IMO and his site is invaluable in trouble shooting little problems and fixing those things that people like me have no idea how to fix. Heck I even learned how to recover my center console from his site!

The defrost issue is quite common as well, I had the same problem. The wires on mine had separated from wear of the window going up down up down up down. I soldered them together and it works but only marginally. I think that the defrost lines themselves on the window are about shot on my truck.

Looks like you could use the rear wiper assembly as well. PM me if you are looking for a source of relatively inexpensive parts like that for 4runner's as I got a good hook up for 1st Gen used parts.

I think the stripes are awesome. I wish my 88 had them. Something about the 80's strip graphics on those trucks makes me think of Back to the Future and all that awesome stuff.

 

I think I will probably leave the stripes.

Tailgate wires could just not be plugged up. But check the 4crawler link above...he has it all there to help you figure it out.

 

How can I restore the rear leaf springs? can you buy a stock replacement? Link? I don't plan on lifting it or anything, at least not anytime soon. I don't like the idea of blocks.

Digital cluster - I found it funny he put in the 35psi gauge and not the 20, I'll swap that out soon too.


Interior shot, look how clean it is! The steering wheel rim has typical wear, but the carpets and seats are still mint somehow.

 

I like it! that altimeter/inclonometer set is nice too and very,very rare for n.a. surf/4runner. about the only improvrmrnt i'd do would be to relocate the boost gauge to a pod on the a-pillar when you replace itwith the 20psi one. If you go this route you might be able to get a package deal from your local speedshop. so far as the springs go any suspension shop should be able to do a rebuild job if you plan to carry any weight or tow you might consider having them add a leaf to the rear pack to improve things. This would also help get rid of the rear sag problem they all have the trade off wouild be a slightly firmer ride. congrats and cheers aviator

 

I envy you... I wanted an 87 originally... Coulda gotten one with an ARB bumper hella 5000's and a WARN winch for 2000 =( + i just like the style of the 87 more than my 91

It just says stuff about letting the engine cool down after hard driving before shutoff.

It already has a XS manual boost controller. Previous owner had it at 11psi, I turned it down to 7 for now till I put an IC on.

Wow, nice Runner it really is clean. I'm shocked how great the engine bay looks with 235,000 on it. Is it the original turbo or what?

 

I'm not sure if its the original turbo, I HIGHLY doubt it.

 

I'd highly doubt its the original turbo as well.... I've got one with almost 200k on the clock for sale, and the turbo in it went out not too long ago
