add relay/fuel pump relay

Hi all

I have been trouble shooting the add system. I am searching for the relay. I found a relay under the dash passenger side of the column. This is where everyone says the ADD relay is. The relay I found says Fuel Pump Relay. With the relay removed car runs fine. Could someone have put it there instead. I searched and found the fuel pump relay is supposed to be behind the glove box. My 90 has a/c and I don't see any room for or any relays there. The relay I am speaking of is mounted on a bracket at the brake pedal.

My 4-runner is a 90 model v-6 5 speed.

Thanks for the any help

The ADD relay is to the right of the steering column, kind of behind the ignition switch, so that one you found is probably it. It should have 5 wires going to it. 4runner's don't have anything called a fuel pump relay, it's controlled by the circuit opening relay, which is behind the glove box. Could be someone used a fuel pump relay from another vehicle in place of the ADD relay.

I solved the idenity problem. I went and saw my handy Toyota Parts guy today. He pulled out a relay for the ADD. I asked if it went near the brake pedal. He went to pull up a diagram and while he was away I started looking at the relay. It said "fuel pump relay" right on it. The parts guy said they use some of the same relays for different things. Tomorrow I will take mine down and we can check the both with the ohm meter.

Add problem solved. I took my relay to the dealer to test mine and his. They tested the same. (saved $77.00) He let me sit down with the factory manual for a bit. This guy went as far as to copy 6 pages of ADD trouble shooting guides and schematics for me. Brought it all home nd started testing. Turns out the wire going into the indicator switch conector had pulled loose. Tested and we have 4WD now.. Got to go back and thank the guy Monday.
