New, used or rebuilt transmission?

My 5sp transmission is making lots of gear noise recently , and it is good on oil, so i plan on running it until ether i can't stand the noise anymore or it dies. My question is in the mean time, should i be looking at a new, used or rebuilt transmission? i was told that Toyota transmissions are bullet proof and if i could find a good used one with 30 or 40k on it i could save a lot of money. But what is the average price of a rebuilt? Has anybody already been down this road that that could give me there opinion?

My tranny was rebuilt for about $1500. I figure it's worth spending the money on a rebuild since it'll need to be done at one point or another. Even a used one will need to be worked on eventually. I guess it also depends if you plan on keeping your rig for a while.

I bought a used tranny before for my Grand Cherokee, and saved only about $700. But then again, I sold it once it was fixed.

You will definitely spend money regardless of which route you choose.

i don't doubt that. I just often see used transmitions for 88 trucks around here for $200-$300 sometimes with only 50k on them, so i wanted to know if you thought it was worth it. Also does anybody know of any good rebuild it places around portland oregon?

I would try puting in Redline MTL. Before I started using Redline, my shifting was very notchy, but with Redline it is a lot smoother. Also, what kind of noise is it?

I have 330+k on my 5 spd and I think Redline has extended its live.

Depending on how hard they are used (read: how dumb they were treated) they are good for 200k and even more. A few hundred bucks for a used one which you install yourself save a LOT over 1500 for a rebuild. And why would the factory trans be bulletproof - its the same exact one you are needing to repair/replace! Marlin has an excellent rep too, and the price isn't bad. Be GLAD you don't have an auto...

I bought a Heavy Duty rebuilt w56 tranny for my 86 4runner from marlin for $1200. It's really strong and I have no complaints. If you can afford it I'd go with marlin.

my rebuild only costed me 500 bucks in Phoenix... does your transmission make sounds in all gears except 4th? If that's the case, it's your syncros..

To my knowledge, noise in all gears except 4th is the output bearing, synchros just effect how easy or hard it is to shift and go through the gears. I'd go with a marlin HD tranny you can't go wrong!

If you have it rebuilt, use Marlin... It's around $1200, but very much worth it for a tranny that will be as good as - if not better than new.

I got mine completely rebuilt for 1000, 495 for the rebuild(including parts!), and 400 for R&R, but I think it was a good deal.

After I paid $900 for a used transmision at Damrons junk yard I have probably seen 10 at less than $200 in just as good of shape.

The transmissions are bulletproof, there are just a few things that destroy them. I guess I ran mine low on gear oil which destroyed it. Locally the quotes to repair it ran up to $1800 so at the tiem I thought $900 wasn't too bad.

Look in the paper or go to a upullit and get the cheapest one you can find and be done with it...

before you replace your transmission, have you looked at your shifter seat bushing, and shifter cap bushing? Often the OE rubber bushing will wear out, I've had this cause a noise in 5th gear before, as well as poping out of second. MarlineCrawler sells a heavy duty replacment thats out of urathane, you might give it a shot, sure helped my tranny. here's the link http://www.marlincrawler.com/docs/sh...eat/index.html

Yes, i replaced the shifter seat bushing, and shifter cap bushing. Made a diffrence, but still has serious problems. Now when i push the clutch it runs nice and queit, but if i am nutral and let off the clutch the trany makes a nice high pitched wine grind thing, and only goes away when clutch is in.
