what is the ultimate backspacing for R15 with a 32" AT tire

what would the best backspacing be for my 32" R15 x 11.5 yoko tires?

3.5? 3.75? 4? and why is it better then stock bs?

I know my AR rockcrawlers have 3.75 back spacing...looks like a good fit with that, no problems...
I'm pretty sure stock is 3.75 as well...u might have to check on that.

so would 3.5 backspacing actually make the tire fit further inside or outside the wheel well?

Your stock BS is either 4.75" or 4.5"
Less backspacing will give you a wider stance, can reduce or eliminate rubbing bigger tires, makes for less chance of a roll over, and looks better/more agressive.

3.75" BS is very common. 3.5" will just stick out a tiny bit more. If your after a wider look, you'll definitely notice it. Will it work? Yes.

Really, theres no such thing as "ultimate backspacing" but 3.75 BS seems to be the most favored, plus they're easy to find or replace.

what are the drawbacks of a slightly wider stance...lets say with a 3.5 BS rim?

I'm not aware of any drawbacks other than you *might* have a chance of rubbing your tires on the outter fender seem when flexed/stuffed. I don't think you'd have to worry about that with 3.5" BS though.

ok this might be a silly question but here goes. How do you measure backspacing?
lay the rime down backside up, have a level across the rim and measure to the back of the mounting surface????

less backspace means more load on the wheel bearings, not to mention if you put something with insanely low backspace on your truck(like 2.5" the crawler guys use) you'd best put on some chrome mud flaps and dingle ball fringe on the inside of the truck
