Lookin at a 3.4 motor for a swap and need some advice

Finally got a call from the wrecker today on the motor. Here's the skinny:

- comes out of a 96 or 99 taco (damn can't remimber the year) 5spd. Sounds like perfict fit right?

- here's the downside its got 180,000 miles on the odo. Sounds like a lot to me what do ya think?

- He said that it runs great, so it could have been rebuilt or had some work done on it, or maybe it just still runs good, that kind of milage makes me nervous though.

-Other bit of good news is that they want 1450US for it which is a lot less then they have gone for in the past I might be able to get them down to 1300US, I'd pay that for a 3.4.

He did say that he had an 01 runner coming in next week with half the milage but it is an auto, he said that if it runs well it will be the same price. The research I've done so far says to match trannies with your donor so the ECU works properly. Would it be possible to take the ECU and harness out of the 5spd and then get the engine out of the 01 or am I making things more complicated for myself?

$1,450 and 180,000 miles...I wouldn't put any eggs in that basket til you have searched around more. look on car-part.com and search the junkyards in your state and get a price from them. Just my opinion...

Well I don't live in the US and this is the 2nd one to come through the city in at least 6 mo. I've been watching and both of those came from out of province (see state) one actually came from an auction in the US. The last one went for over $2000 and it went out of province. Problem is that Toyota trucks are worth way more up here then they are down there, for example I saw reciently a 94 xcab v6 for $12000 no joke and he likely got close to that too.

Anyway if you read the post you would see that there is another one coming next week with half the milage. My main question is about the ECU and wiring.

The ECU and wireing will have to be swaped/modified.

Its not an easy task. Hope you get the entire truck for that price....

I'll get everything I need for the swap for that price. Its not so bad my 3.0 needs a rebuild anyway so I'm looking at spending a few hundred bucks more then the cost of the rebuild and I'll probably make that up parting out the 3.0. I'm not worried about the price or the work involved in the swap itself.

If I take the 5spd ECU from the 99 and get the harness and engine from the 2001 (which is an auto) will they just be plug and play? Also does anyone know if the 01 auto engines are drilled for a pilot bearing?

My advise is get the engine, tranny and ECU from the same donor truck.

Yea normally I'd agree except that the engine I want is mated to an auto and I'm not gonna build an auto rig. I'm gonna have to be creative these 2 engines make 3 to come through these parts in a while.

Hope you're good at figuring out wiring nightmares because that auto ECU is wired and programed to run an auto tranny.

If you ae going to use a 99 ecu then get a 99 harness. Trust me it's easier to use the right year cause Toyota moved some of the pin locations around in different years. I found this out the hard way cause I had a 96 taco harness and a 96 4runner ecu. They turned out to be different but I made it work with a little research. Basically I'm saying save yourself a headache and order a harness from a hard for the right year as your ecu. The engine year won't matter that much as long as it's relatively close but I've heard that some 01's weren't machined for a pilot bearing. You could always get the 99 motor and do some minor work on it before you put it in.
