I have been trying to find out if I can install a OEM toyota tonneau cover on an existing OEM Toyota bed liner. My OEM bedliner goes up and over the bed/rails.

Can this be done without having to cut the bedliner at the top of the rails?

Do anyone know anything about this?

I've got the same type of bedliner in my 94 Toyota Pickup. I've been wondering the same thing.

 

You can but you will have to cut holes in the liner where the clamps go underneith the bed rail.

 

Its driving me crazy, everyone I have talked with over the phone has told me a different story.

Where do the holes get cut?

My liner has existing holes at the four corners of the bed, can I use them? The holes are not at the top of the liner kind of down half way.

Does anyone have pics of tonneau cover w/bedliner? maybe that'll help me and us to understand how this is mounted to the liner

Ok first off let's clear up what kind of Tonneau cover you are talking about. If it is fiberglass or any similar hard tonneau, then I would say you will have no problems with install. Those tend to mount on hinges in the rear and then have hydraulic props that would need to be mounted on each side. Then of course the locking latch brackets to the rear of the truck. But yes that will work.

If it is a vinyl tonneaue cover, then you will need to cut the holes. I think you were probably talking about the hard style tonneau. The soft ones have a rail system that goes around the perimeter of the bed and gets clamped in 4 spots (2 on each bed side rail.) The clamp attaches to the tonneau rail and has c clamps that clamp them to the top of the bed rails. Then the tonneau is snapped to the tonneau rail.

There are six clamps that go under the bed rail that clamp rails to the top of your bed. You will have to cut holes near the top of the liner (3 on each side) to get the clamp to go under your bed rail. Your other option is to cut the liner so it fits under thre bedrail. You will not need the liner to go over the rail after you install the cover. The rails that come with the cover will protect the bed rail. I have the Extang tonneau III, it was about $200 and has a 10 year warranty on the vinyl....I'm very satisfied with it.

 

The dealer kind of got me to understand there is an OEM soft type that does need holes cut in the liner and can mount over a bedliner??

Is that possible?

Go back to the dealer and make him show you what he is talking about.

Why don't you just screw the tonneau rails down to the bed rails instead of using the clamps? Sure, you'd have some small holes in the bedliner/bed rail if you ever took it off, but a little silicone would seal that right up. Then you wouldn't have the ugly clamps to deal with.

Luckily I got a picture of the clamp for ya before standing on it. Hopefully this explains how it attaches a little better.

I stopped by the dealer as suggested and found out that the person I spoke with on the phone forgot to mention that I would need to cut holes for the clamps. So now everyone talking the same story
