Slaughterhouse Gulch Run on Sunday

I would like to invite the Denver Front Range people on a run this Sunday. I know you guys just went on a run there a month or so ago. But, with all the snow lately, it should be interesting.

I also set this up as a Rising Sun Club run Rising Sun . I haven't had many people on the last few run's so I don't expect tons of people.

Time: Meet at 9:30 Leave at 10:00am
Meeting Place: Giant Hot Dog Stand in Aspen Park\HWY 285
Leader: Perry Loughridge
CB Channel: 4
Difficulty: Moderate to easy

Sounds like fun Scott. I bet it will be snowy. I'm in.

I'm not familiar with the hot dog stand. Are there any other obvious landmarks near there to help me find it?

Thanks, Matt

Glad your in Matt. I've been having a hard time getting people to go on runs this winter. I hear there is a fair abount of snow at Slaughterhouse and that stump hill is quite challenging. I don't know about you, but I have no room in the fender wells for chains anymore. The MTR's sure dig in the snow nicely though. It should be fun.

The meeting place is at a hot dog stand that is in the shape of a giant hot dog. It's on the north side of HWY285 in Aspen Park before the traffic lights. You can't miss it.

I can't tell if this run sounds like fun or not.

I remember when we went up there a few weeks ago and there was just a tiny bit of snow - I said to myself "I wouldn't want to be going down this hill with a lot of snow!" And the Mountains have been hammered by snow the last few days.

So, I probably am gonna pass on this one - Sorry.

John

I hear ya John. I can understand your apprehension. I'm not really exactly what to expect either.

I was there once when there was a lot of snow. It meant that only 3 of us made it up stump hill. I only made it because I chained up the rear and had the locker engaged. Most of the other people could still drive around from the lower road and run some of the other roads. We definitely didn't drop down the back side. We'll se though. I've been feeling pretty confident in the snow with these MTR's.

It will be interesting for sure. That's why we have winches and MTRs right Scott?

A couple of months ago I went on a run with Colorado4x4.org guys on a very icy and snowy Eagle Rock trail. My tires did beautifully, unlike almost everyone else there thet day.

Come on Sunday!!!

I'll have to think about that. I don't have chains that'll fit my tires any more. That trail is pretty challenging with snow on it. It's extremely challenging with 18" of snow (Been there, done that).
I'm glad we've gotten so much snow, but at the same time, I'm really bummed out because it's limited the amount of four-wheeling I can do.

Slaugherhouse Gulch Run

Scott,

I'll be there with my 9000i so we should be able to tackle anything we run into.

There will probably be at least 3-4 Landcruisers and 4Runner's there from Rising Sun.
It should be a fun one.

Glad to see your in Matt and Randy. What about you Darren ?

Hopefully it won't be too icy with the warm weather lately, and the traffic on the trail from Sat. But, it is a pretty easy trail on the front side of the mountain. It's ideal for a winter run. Except for stump hill of course. That will take some skill in the snow.

What about you Darren ?

I'll be staying back on this one, but thanks. I've got church, so I will usually pass on Sunday morning runs. I'll look forward to your trail reports and pics! Yeah, I would think Stump Hill should be interesting also!

I got my 285's installed last Saturday and I know they're itching to get out for the first time to get broken in, but alas, it will have to be another time.

Randy, you taking your Jeep, or did you get a winch installed on the Runner?

Enjoy it guys!

Darren,
Nice report. We'll have to catch you on the next run. Congratulations on the 285's! I'm thinking Chinaman's next month on Sat, the 5th. Unless there too much snow. Then maybe Carnage. SO it sounds like you'll be ready with those new tires.

Randy told me he was taking his Jeep on this one. His wife's Runner has a ways to go in the modification dept.

Mike Brown (Sandman) and family are going tomorrow also.

I would come, but....................

It's a bit far. Found another one for you down here. Up a large waterfall with water and through an opening taller than the truck with only like 6" to spare on each side. Walls both sides. Still trying to recover from this one. It's called Jack Handle and with the 5.29 I had cluch smoke pouring from the wheel wells.

Hardest obstical I have run.

Steve, that sounds like buggy territory. Or better suited for a beater or older 4x4. We wouldn't want 't to take the "fun" out of it due to the pucker factor..

Randy, won't make it today. His wife had a baby yesterday. I told him he was excused.

So how was it up there this weekend?

The sun was sure shining here in Denver - how about up in the Mtn's?

It was wet, slick and muddy. Stump hill was totally doable and relatively easy with a locker and a little momentum. The guys with fat mud tires were crippled. They floated on the snow and had no traction.

Three of us in the group did far better than the others. Jason in this cherry 98 Tacoma TRD. He had Fabtech coilovers. Which look similar to the SAW's and new 31' MTR's. Robbie (Slee's mechanic), who had a FZJ80 with 315/85/16 MTR's, e-lockers front and rear. And myself. I think I strapped everyone at some point. Except for these two guys. Again, the MTR's really showed their stuff.

The small roads through the forest, were very tricky to navigate. You were on the verge of slipping off the tracks numerous times. Which many people did. Several guys left there trucks behind and sat with us as we explored more roads. We didn't quite make it all the way down the back side. We were close to the mogul section. But, had to turn around for the benefit of the group as it kept getting steeper and off-camber. The mud hole was crazy slick. There were a bunck of cowboys showing off with their full sizes.

We missed Matt. In fact Sandman's kids kept asking if he was going to show up. Randy had a baby. So no one from this board made it. I'll post some pictures tonight for the heck of it.

Remember Chinamans Gulch next month.

Sounds like you had fun.

Where is Chinaman's Gulch? What's the difficulty?
I don't remember seeing that in my books.

Chinaman's is one of the more difficult trails we do each year. It will have some snow this time of year. So it will be even more difficult. It usually has less snow than other trails in the winter though.

Slider's would be the key for this run. Pictures from last summer here: http://community.webshots.com/album/45100780hJTmJB i suffered body damage last time (no sliders).
