Hey guys , got a question for you novice wheelers... Currently on my 89 runner I am running 32s with stock gearing and its fine for wheeling..Its no speed demon by far, but it does exactly what I need it to..(thank god for 4 low..) Now my future plans include about 5-6 inches of total lift along with some 5:29 gears and some sort of rear locker... Now what I really want to know is if I put the 35s on before the gears, will my truck be useless in the mud for playing around??? Like I said in 4 low it does great with the 32s, but another 3" of tire is getting up there for stock gears.....Does anyone have any personall expierence with this particular setup??? I know its not optimal, but will it work for what I am doin, which is basically goofin off in some mudd????? Thanks in advance as always....

 

I guess it all depends. I've got a healthy 22re and with stock 4.11's I STILL want to go slower offroad and it's a dog on the highway (31" tires). What kind of wheeling do you do?

My plan is 4.88's in the axles and marlin low tcase gears for offroad. then run 32" or 33" AT's on the road and 34 or 35" LTB's offroad.

 

Just some minor climbing here and there...Mostly just blasting through mud and what not...I am not into serious rock climbing or anything like that...

 

ahh. yeah, for rocks, you/I just want to go as slow as possible and not have to ride the clutch. The lower the gearing the better. Tcase gears can go much, MUCH lower then axle gears.

 

I just bought my first toyota, a 91 truck with the 22re, stock gears, and 35's. So basically, I have what you are talking about. I can tell you that the 22re will push the tires, you just have to use 4lo a lot more ( compared to my v8 dakota on 32's ). It really is kinda impractical on the road though because you wind up having to run in 4th gear to keep the engine from lagging. Personally I would advise changing the gears if you are gonna go that big with the tires. I have a friend that runs 5.29's and 40" swampers on his and it does really good, so that might be an overkill on gears for you, maybe 4.88's might be just right.

 

Just to clarify, when you say you are using 4 low alot more, are you reffering to mudding, climbing, street driving???

i've driven an '81 with 33s and 3.90 gears, and it was bearable, but not something i'd really want to do. hell, 32s and 4.37s are bad enough, but that was on my old 4 speed with a 3.67 first gear.

 

For your 22RE - 4.88s with 33s, 5.29s with 35s. Trust me.
