Another Rear Window Question (searched)

Mine is pretty simple, the key in the tailgate works fine up and down and the switch does nothing. I looked over 4crawlers site, but I'm still not sure where to go.

Do I need a new switch, or one of those relay/module things? Any help would be great.

Thank You!

i had problems with the switch on mine. it was pysically sticky to the touch, and you could see were countless soda/whatever had been spilled on it. (this was right after i bough mine used)

I took it out and cleanded it with a toothbrush and it then actually "clicked" right and its been good sence.

<Edit> now that i think about it, it would go down with the switch, but not up, so i had a good idea it was a switch problem. (key worked fine same as you)

If the key works fine I would check the switch. The easy way to check if it is the switch is to short the connections (on the wire that connects to the switch, not the switch itself) and see if it makes the window go up and/or down. I did that to check my back-up light switch and when the light came on I knew the switch didn't work.

Follow the advanced troubleshooting tips that I have on the page:

A clicking relay is one of the troubleshooting tips listed on the page. Read it and I'm sure you will find the answer.

Well the click I hear is the switch, not a relay. Anyways, the shop has the 4runner right now due to a miss problem so it will be a few days till i can go it it, for now I'm just taking notes. I will try jumping the switch, and if its still bad, it must be a realy.

Again, that is a clue, and you did not mention the click in your PM to me. If the switch clicks and the relay does not, then the signal from the switch is not getting to the relay. So either the switch it bad, the contacts are dirty, damage to the wiring/connectors between the switch and relay or the relay coil itself is burned out.

Does the mechanical click of the switch mean anything other than it moved?

Roger, you remind me of my dad a lot, he is in IEEE too. Not ment to be offensive in any way, just a starnge observation. You even look a lot like him.

Anyway, back on topic, I will prob need to hunt down a switch. Anyone have a price from a dealer?

Thanks!

Look at the workings of the switch. It has a mechanical part that you push with your finger and it moves some stuff inside. One of those things that move is a pair of metal contacts. So one possibility is the mechanical part is messed up, common problem on the power window switches: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...l#WindowSwitch

Or the metal contacts could be dirty, pitted or somehow messed up. Only way to know is to pull it out, look at how it works, test it (w/ ohm meter or test light) and fix or replace it as needed.

Well, as luck would have it it works again. It makes no sense to me but I'm not complaining. Thanks for all your help.

Note that if you have the window lock button on lock, the rear window switch does not work.

Talking

Figured it was worth a try at least. It has caught me off-guard a couple of times.

Likely an intermittent electrical problem. It probably will return, so next time it acts up, continue troubleshooting.

Yeah, we had a LOT of wet weather lately so that may have been part of it.
