locking hub wont go back to free

I have been driving my 84 4runner around and on freeway for a while w/ out any problems. Today i go to put it into 4wheel drive and realize the left hub is alreday there (engaged in 4wheel drive). It's stuck there and moves a little less then a cenimeter but wont go back into free. Its just the left one and the right hub works fine. How do i fix this and is it safe to drive on the road w/out causing any more damage?

take off the hub dial and see whats going on, you are suppose to put it on lock when you take it off, so you are half way there!

This link give a great write-up on taking your hubs apart and cleaning/rebuilding them.

Someone has put the lock-out cap on wrong for you. Unscrew the 6 little bolts. (10mm) remove the cap and the clutch hub should come with it. If it doesn't you'll have to put it back together the RIGHT way. Rotate the entire knob assembly until it goes back in the lock-out hub. I think you will find it is 180 degrees wrong. Be sure you have the dial cranked all the way to lock or unlock, not in the middle. I put my caps on in the UNLOCK position, then crank to lock to test. Everything OK? Torque the little bolts back down to only 7 ft/lbs. (not much!) It should take you 5 minutes if the thing is assembled right.
