After buying a new K&N filter earlier today, I feel like doing this mod to get more out of my 3.4. I won't be able to do the elbow or decplate mod since my father doesn't want me to put holes in the brand new truck. So I would just do this mod and see if it stacks up. I think the induction noise will be the same as the deckplate/elbow mod since the opening is practically the same size. (I can't do the ISR mod *bummer*)

What is the difference between this mod and the elbow/deckplate mod in terms as performance?
What can I use to hold the filter in place so it doesn't fall out?

 

You gotta make sure you jam somehting in there to keep the filter pressed into place and keep the seal at the back of the airbox if all you're going to do is prop the lid open. otherwise the fillter might fall forward and let a bunch of unfiltered air and debris into the intake. If you do that, it's basically the same and less permanent then the deck plate.

 

I'm thinking about using 1" C-Clamps to hold the filter straight to the box, and some electrical tape, if nessasary. But i'm concerned about the box-lid touching the hoo/hood insulator, and not closing properly. Is this a concern?

Plus the engine might be getting hotter air because is at the opening at the "top" of the box, exposed to hot egine-air. Or am I just making this up?

 

That's the least of your worries.

 

Wouldn't be too much of a problem. The wind-chill is starting to get colder here so that hot-air temperature could drop, and that equals a peppy engine in the morning

 

I have been running with my airbox lid off for 2 years. I use a 1 inch c-clamp on the middle top of the filter to hold it tight against the filter. The c-clamp holds it tighter against the box than the lid does. The lid pops off easily and can be stored in your glove box. The top of the box is a couple of inches away from where you would put the deckplate so hotter air is not an issue.Besides, there is no hot air in the engine compartment when you're moving. I think it's a good mod but I get flamed by the deckplate guys.

 

The lid removal should be equal to the elbow removal and slightly less efficient than the deckplate (because the air needs to make a 90 degree bend). How much that means in HP, who knows. Just be vary careful that you don't let the engine breathe unfiltered air.

 

Hey Tacomanator, how do you remove the lid from the air-box? And how is the inducton noise? I broke the hinge for the lid, trying to take the lid off. I tried using the 2" C-Clamp, but it seems to big.

Will electrical tape and a clamp be enough to hold it in? Pics please!!

 

I would think so. Like it was mentioned earlier never let that engine get bastardized air into it. If I were you I would go for the FIPK Gen 2 Kit. It sounds really good and gives a good mileage increase as well as hp and torque.

 

I don't have a digital camera so no pics for now. The lid pops off at the hinge on my airbox...open the lid pop it off. Go to the hardware store and get a 1 inch c-clamp, a 2 inch will be too large. I don't like the tape idea and would wait until you get the proper clamp. The hinge should have 2 black little nubs that pop into the airbox. If it does not pop out easy I would try to get a screwdriver under it and be gentle.It does get loud at WOT but other than that it sounds fine...I also have the Airaid MIT and that could contribute to some of the noise, not to mention my Vortex muffler.

 

Is the clamp facing up, or on its side?

 

Lay the clamp on its side against the top of the airbox so it does not interfere with closing the hood. The screw part/handle will protrude over the opening of the airbox.

 

I tried clamping it before, but the clamp seems to be slipping off. Is this because the filter frame on my air-filter (K&N) different form yours?

 

I use the stock paper filter and the spinning part on the screw of the c-clamp fits under the plastic part of the filter where the filter media is...and the top part of the c-clamp goes against the ridge on the air box. It could be that I found the perfect c-clamp for this application or your filter is causing the problem.

Also in regards to your sig, OEM mean Original Equiplemt Manufactor and is normaly used when talking about replacement parts on a vehicle. Unless you have replaced your exterior suspension and interior with OEM parts, I think you want to say Factory or Stock.

well back to on topic, i read this post and figured id try this as im too lazy to cut up my airbox. i went and got a 1' C clamp opened the lid and hit the road. on the highway i notice a little jump and definitely noticed the increased sound,,pretty nice. driving normal things "seemed" a little smoother. i figure ill run it for a tank and see what it does to the mileage if i can swap lead for a feather foot.
