I have a 2000 4runner with the 3.4, and I can't seem to find the the fuel filter. I already checked the tech section, but my truck has a huge skidplate covering the driver side undy-body

Could the fuel filter be hiding under this skidplate?

Its right under your drivers side rear seat door... Just get under and look up. Its attached to the bottom of the body.

I wouldnt recommend changing it though.... Its a pain in the ass because you have to deal with fuel and its torqued on there really good.

I didnt gain any performace either. Just an hour out of my time

 

yep, right under where you sit in the driver seat.

i changed mine. it wasn't hard at all. but yeah, no performance gain.

 

Thanks guys, I decided not to change it since the car is only 5 years old, and still running decent. But, I did pour in some Redline fuel system cleaner to get rid of some the crap in the fuel system.

 

hmm...ive got 200k on mine. Do you think i should replace it?

 

I was told that if i changed my fuel filter at this stage(100k) I run the risk that the filter may not go back on. If that becomes the case the fuel line may need replacement. So at this moment i am going with the advice that ill let the filter and lines rust to the point they need to be replaced

Toyota says these fuel filters are lifetime filters, so they don't have to be replaced. I think this is b.s. Go ahead and change it if u want, no one's stopping you.

 

yeah i kinda heard the same thing. I also think its b.s. cause I know eventually it will. its just that it would really suck to have to change your lines too. I know others have changed it w/o problems but as with all things its a risk you take. On top of that I dont think it would do too much to help the fuel flow taht much better for the risk.

 

Fuel lines are not so easy to replace, and once you know they're rusted, you'll know theres lots of crap in your engine too. Thats my $0.02 cents.
