2.7 Gas Mileage Bad

Does anyone have any suggestions on improving my gas mileage. I recently purchased a 2000 2.7 2wd 4 runner.
I purchased the 2.7 because it is supposed to get 20 in town and 24 on the road. I get around 18 no matter how I drive it. Pushing it, or light foot, in town, stop and go or on the highway. I thought this would get better mileage. Plugs and filter are new. It has 76K on it. I am really disappointed at this point.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It does have 265 vs the 225 tires it is supposed to have. Other than that everything is stock.

well if you get 18 regardless of how you drive it... i suggest you stomp it at all times. other than that try the stock size tire of 225

Are you compensating for the increased tire diameter in your mileage calculation?

And yes, larger tires will affect your mileage unless you change the gearing.

Make sure your math is right first though...

I've got a 2.7. I get 14 to 16mpg, maybe 18 on highway. My engine runs great and the gas mileage aint bad either.

Ive got a 2.7 and with 265/65/17 and i get 20 mpg with about half city and half highway. I hit the gas every so often too. Try using one of those additives but your mpg is right about there.

Well, number one you have to do some math to make sure you figured your mileage right and the larger tires will reduce mileage.
You don't say where you live but unless it's Iowa or Kansas or in desert then don't expesct the mileage you see on the sticker,
I live right in the mountains of WV and I if I got the mileage you do all the time I would be very happy.
How much weight do you carry? My bed tool box full of tools for off road problems and repairs and myself come to about 500 lbs. Makes a big difference , Mike

I live in Oklahoma. The main reason I bought this is I have a friend who has a 99 with the 2.7 and he consistenly gets 22-23 average combination city/town. Maybe his is a fluke. He does have the stock tires. I am ready to trade for something that will do better than 18 if I cant get it up. I thought the tires were just wider not taller. Is that incorrect?

Yes, that is incorrect. Your tires are taller.

Thanks found a site that converts the diameter. You are right they are about 2.5 inches taller. So the mileage is a little better than 19 on a highway trip I just took. Wonder if going back to the orginal size would actually help the mileage. It appears when you are going 60 you are going 65. So will have to watch my speed unless I change back to the 225.

I think your friend may be "exaggerating" a bit... In a lightweight 2wd pickup you could maybe see 22-23 with 25 or more highway, but not in a heavy 4Runner. 18-20 in the real world and 23ish on highway trips is about right if you don't plant your foot too hard.

I am only getting 19 highway figuring it with the oversized tires. I would be tickled with 23.

If you have a truck that came stock with the Big Tire Package, does that mean that it is automatically equiped with the proper gears to match the tires?

This site is great at showing you how to find out what gears you have and really goes into detail. Mike

I would guess that the larger tires can account for most of your mileage issues in that your odometer is not accurately logging the miles and also bigger tires need a little bit more power to get going and keep going.

Other than that...

Have you checked your spark plugs (gapping included) and wires? Cleaned your throttle body and/or MAF sensor? Changed/checked your air filter? You should start out by checking most maintenance items that you can do yourself then work from there.
