Buying Steel

Now that I have some time off this summer, I'm working on repairing my skid plates and painting everything that has been scratched from off-roading and is now rusting. Last summer I made the tcase skid like transalper (sp?) with 3/16" steel. The plate is now all bent up and needs to be hammered back and given reinforcement. Since I'm on a very low budget and I don't know how to weld, I'm thinking of just adding some strips of 1/4" steel through the tcase skid bolts from one cross member to the other. Hopefully this will add the much needed strength.

My problem is that I can't find a good place to buy raw steel. For the tcase, I had to go to this steel place which usually sells their products to huge oil rigs and NEVER to individuals for 4x4's. They were very confused, had trouble cutting the huge pieces of steel to my plan, and charged me too much. I have called ACE hardware and Home Depot and they both dont sell steel. Where would ya'll reccomend I pick some up?

I'd check the yellow pages for steel building construction businesses. they often carry supplies for resale.

Several of the companies in the list above should be able to supply your needs.

I go the the swap meet when I need angle iron. There are always old bed frames for sale - CHEAP!!!

Try a welding supply retailer. Usually they have access to or sale metal stock. They should at least be able to direct you in the right direction.

Hey man,

Since you are local, I suggest you check out Dencol. Its a HUGE steel place...I mean they have a hardware store, a steel cutting warehouse, ect.

Check the remenents section, you can pick up precut pieces of steel for cheaper than buying em new.

Also go to local manufacturing places and maybe if you know someone at the local transit authority (buses/trains)

you can score some good used/scrap steel from them
