Stock 3rd gen 4Runner exhausts - single cat vs dual cat?

I have a friend with a 4Runner in CA that has a stock dual cat exhaust. He is going to replace the muffler only.

If it's just the muffler he is replacing, he can just go to any muffler shop and swap out the old muffler for a new one, right? I'm not talking about a full system. So if it's dual cat or single cat, it shouldn't matter, correct?

For ex. If you try to buy a full TRD system, you have to specify, single or dual cat, because some 96-02 4runners are single cat and some dual cat from the factory.

Again, I'm just talking about swapping out the main muffler.
