I've read (and recently experienced) that in open-diff ADD (2nd gen) 4runners, when in 4x4 and losing traction, only one of the wheels in the front and one in the rear will actually be turning. I'm looking into getting a locker like the detroit ez-locker or true-trac for the rear on my 94 because I like offroading but still would need something that wont effect street driving. Does anyone on this board have any experience with them?

 

The True Trac is excellent, but I would look into Detroit's new electric locker. It works as a limited slip in regular use, but yo ucan then flip a switch and get a fully spooled locker like an ARB.

 

That's the Detroit Electrac. You can look into it, but don't hold your breath for too long. They don't even have plans to make it for Toyota diffs yet. Right now, their only application is for the Dana44...

As far as the Detroit Truetrac goes, I have one in my front diff and it's great! There's definitely a noticeable improvement over stock, but for some serious off-roading, I'd go with a locker.

 

I ran a True-Trac rear for a couple of seasons for the reasons that you mentioned. It was transparent on the street, but it was not as visible as I would have liked wheeling. Now I run ARB's and love them.

Ask yourself a couple of questions:
Do you know what Super Swampers are?
Have you heard of the Hammers?
Do dents interest you?

If any of these things register as a yes, I would say avoid the LSD for now and look at real lockers.
