Well guys, im looking at possibly getting a 3rd gen, my question is i have been reading up on the tundra/OEM lift and i wondering how well that lift will clear 33's or 285-75? I want to go off road more and im not going to baby the thing so i want to make sure i have enough lift to not own my fenders. Also, does anyone have some pics of there gen 3 with 33s on it? Just wanting to get some idea of where it would sit. And i really like the looks of the ARB bumpers but if i do this lift with 33s and then slap a heavy bumper on the front am i gonna be in trouble with tire/fender issues?

 

this has been covered a lot....generally if u want to fit 33s w/o any issue, new rims (16x8) are needed and a 1" RB BL (roger brown body lift) would be best. I actually plan on doing these things soon

what kind of back spacing do you guys run on your rims. The stockers seem to be pretty skinny, and from what pictures i have seen it looks like you dont want to wide of a tire in fear of tearing up the running boards and fenders.

 

i've got 2.5" suspension lift, 1.5" body lift, 285/75/16s on stock 16x7's with limited style fender flares and a TJM t-15 on my 3rd gen and no rubbing.

 

that pic is w/ myself and a passenger (waskillywabbit) (probally 450# between the two of us, and about 250# or more of gear in the back.

tundra/spacer up front w/ downey's in the back and a 1" BL running 305/70-16 (big 33's) on toyota 16x8 wheels w/ 4.5" BS. only other thing that i've done is to cut ou thte lower section of fender lining in the back of the front fenders and then faltten out the pinch weld. they still rub slightly offroad, but not bad at all and only on a 1/4 turn when stuffed.

I've got 33/12.5-15s on my 3rd gen... all OME suspension and a 2" body lift... I still rub slightly in the front on compression/turn, but that's it. If you want to run a 12.5" wide tire, you'll need aftermarket a-arms and a body lift (or a ton of trimming/pounding). It's the width of the tire that makes the biggest difference, not the height.

 

i have a 2" suspension lift, 1" body lift (and have only just started to pound the pinch weld), stock upper a-arms, and lexus lx450 wheels that are 16"x8" with 4.5" backspacing. they BARELY rub on a full stuff...

ok, let me clerify... if you're going to run 12.5" wide tire on 15x7 rims, you're going to need aftermarket aarms.

 

MOST DEFINITELY. you will rub w/ 285/75's on 16x7's without wheel spacers for that matter.

What is most commonly found for a wheel size on the 4runners. I thought they were all 16s. I thought maybe with some exception like a 2wd or something.

 

Most are 16s... but there's a good number of 15" wheels sprinkled in as well.

 

Yeah my '97 SR5 V6 5sp is a 4x4 with 15" alloys, (and 3.9 gears like jacksonpt). My only mod so far was taking off the running boards and adding front splash guards. My bank account and I could get in a lot of trouble reading what guys are doing on this site.

Jacksonpt, you've got much larger than stock tires, but are still running the 3.909 gears, right? How has that impacted your mileage and power? I'm not looking to run 33s as I don't really want to lift it, but maybe move up to 31s like the Runners with 16" wheels have. I wonder if the change from 225/75/15 to 31" tires would necessitate a gearing change.
The calculator on offroaders.com shows a gearing change to 4.24, (4.30 I guess), which is even lower than what most 16" wheel 3rd gen 4Runners came with stock, (4.10). Weird.

 

Yes, I still have my 3.90s. Power is a bit of an issue, especially when towing, but it didn't take long to get used to. I bought my truck to use as a truck - if I wanted power and handling, I would have bought a sports car... so I don't mind the way it drives. Gas mileage is currently 15mpg in town... not sure about highway - I don't do much highway driving in my rig.

Before I got my 33s, I had 32/11.5-15 Dueler ATs. There was still a loss in power, but not as bad as with the 33s. Gas mileage was about 18 in town, 22-25 on highway, depending on my speed. If you stick with an AT, I don't think you'll have any problems with a 31" tire on the stock gears. You may notice a small drop in power, but it shouldn't take you long to get used to it, assume you don't drive your truck like a race car.

And FWIW... 4.10 and 4.30s are both very common in 3rd gen 4Runners with the 16" wheel package.
