I really looked around for some threads before I posted this, but most of the threads were not for the '99-02 models of 4runners.

I was driving on a dark 4wd road the other night and I noticed how lame the High beam is on the 4runner...it was great for 50+ feet ahead of me, but I couldn't see anything right in front of me. And then when my low beams were on with my fogs; I could see everything from the line of sight to about 40 feet in front of my 4runner. Now, it seems to me that there must be a way to have the fogs on with the high beams and low beams...but how???

Any ideas would be much appreciated...but I'm really looking for people who have done this mod to their '99-02 4runner.

I wired my 1st gen fog lights to work independent of the headlights. THe key is to trigger the fog light relay off of something like the parking light circuit instead of off the low beam circuit as they are supposed to be wired. In my case since I was adding lights, I just tapped into the parking lights for the relay power. In your case, find the relay that controls the fogs, get the wiring diagram that shows how it is hooked up and change the wire that supplies power to the relay coil.

Technically, fogs are supposed to only be on w/ low beams. But as you note, I find that they work well to fill in below the high beams on dark backcountry roads. When I do see oncoming traffic, I manually turn off the fogs.

I suppose if I had real driving lights and some off-road lights, I would not need the fog+high beam trick, but it works fine and I don't like having boat loads of lights on my truck. Some Hella headlights and a pair of Hella fog lights is plenty for me.

hehe, beat me to it, I've done this mod, works great, also added in a separate relay system to run the main lighting so both low and high beams can be on at the same time.

Have to be careful with the hi/low together thing. It gets very hot and can melt many of the modern plastic aero lights, and can get so hot it melts the bulb holder and first couple inches of wire too.

 

One of the coolest mods and so simple but I hear it's not so easy on the 4th gens.

 

It's maybe different with 01-02 year because I followed that instruction on my 02 SE and it didn't work at all, I tried 2 times with the same results.

Did anyone do this on 01-02 model year? Helps would be appreciated.
