Post Valve shimming oil changes???

Well after finishing my valve shimming I poured 10w40 over all the cam lobes and rechecked lash - perfect.

Then reassembled and she fired up after about 1 minute of cranking in intervals.

Anyhow I drove the truck normally for 50 miles then changed the oil and filter. Right now I'm coming up on 400 miles....I was planning on changing at 500.

Should I or is there any kind of break in routine that I should be following?

And why is my oil ORANGE?
