what are the best gears for 33's

i have to replace the gearing if i want to get a rear locker because they dont make the toyota e-locker with 3.90 gears. hopefully someday i will have a lift and enough room to stuff 33's under it so i am triing to plan ahead a little bit. i have a 93 4runner with the 3.0 V6 and a 5 speed. this is my daily driver so i would like to keep some decent gas mileage and still be able to cruise at highway speeds without redlining it. i was thinking 4.10's but im not sure that would be enough. please help

4.88 seems to be the choice for most.

4.56s or 4.88s.....

4.56s would probably give better hiway cruise mileage while 4.88s will give more punch off the line for city driving

I say avoid 4.56, I have those and 33s. Even though they reduce RPMs, I have to run at wide open throttle to keep up 70 on the highway, a hill meens 4th gear.

4.88 or if you want some punch 5.29's (They'll rev a bit higher on the freeway)

I too would skip 4.56

with 4.88 and 31's would my gas mileage take a swift nose dive? i am triing to plan for the future. i wish i could buy 33's right now but funds wont allow it. so would 4.88's be overkill for 31's? should i wait on the locker until i can afford to lift and buy 33's all at the same time? i hope not that'd be a while? i dont know what to do

I have a 95 with a 3.4 V-6 automatic and 33's.

With 5.29 gears I get around 20 mpg on I-25.

Got to go w/ Cheeze on this. At our alt. 5.29's would make up for lost power. I went w/ 4.56 when I put 31's on, every things fine, same RPM as stock, spedo is only 3mph off at 65. Feels like 4.10's w/ 28's. BUT if I were to do it again (which my happen soon) I'd go w/ 4.88's for 31's or 32's. Even 4.88's and 31's would not be too 'buzzy' at hi-way speed and when you get up to where the wheelin is you'll be spot on.

Save some do-ra-me, find some used Toy 4.88's, throw on some 32's and call it good.

Jake.

my runner came with 4.88's and I have used 31's 32's and 33's on those tires and each tire makes it a little more sluggish off the line, due to the wieght. But on the highway, it keeps getting better and better. nothing changes on the speedo or the rpms or anything obviously, but im going about 85 when my speedo says 75, so I gain more speed. However, 4.88's are pretty much perfect for 33's, and i will try them with 35's. In fact I have a set of 33'' tsls on the way and those tires are the same height
as some 35's, im interested to see what happens.
