OH NO! NOISE AND SMOKE from rear diff.

to start: 2 weeks ago i aquired a leak in my rear diff..

today i put in about 10 hours offroad. a few hours after i parked her i went to get pizza.. had my stereo on didnt hear it.. had my stereo on for the ride home and turned it off when i smelt something.. couldnt hear anything.. when i let off the gas for a stop light i hear this bad bad noise while coasting.. untill i get to around 15mph or less. i was doing 50-70 when i first heard the noise, when i hit the stop lgiht i could see smoke in ym headlights.. it didnt smoke again cuz i drove liek 25 the rest of the way... 2 blocks away from home i took it up to 50 and back to test.. it made a lil smoke.

before this i had a similar issue.. when i would coast the truck would vibrate, when gassing no vibration... but no smoke

what do you all knwo about this?

Too many variables. Did you go 10 hrs. non-stop or did you stop and let the Runner sit for any measurable mount of time during the 10 hrs.? How many miles did you go in that 10 hrs.? Were you in the flats? Rockcrawling? Going up steeps or anything with altitude, like going up to Charleston?

in that 10 hours she spent about 2 hours parked about 20 minutes at the most each time, . about 4 hours accumulitive running 2wd hard and fast on flatter terrain with a few 2wd climbs and "jumps"... about 2 hours accumulitive climbing relativly knarly rock (rested 30 minutes at the top for my buds to get up, and to rest the trucks, myne got the longest rest), an accumulitive hour of trying to drive out of being stuck (wheels digging, tranny getting hott, that sort of thing) about an hour of downhill in lowest drive gear, switching between 1 and 2, in 2wd. about 1/8 mile on pavement to get back to the house...

sounds like something i should get rectified by a pro.. seeing as how i want to put over 15k on her in south america and dont want to fix this on the road... this will give me a chance to upgrade the ratio in back...

what makes you think thats the problem, any previouse experiance?

that sounds just like the problem i had. it was a loud clicking/ticking sound that went faster as i did. didn't really hear it at slow speeds, and not so much when giving it gas. i didn't have the smoke issue tho.

it ended up being a couple chipped teeth on my ring gear. it just seemed to come out of nowhere, it wasn't directly after any wheeling. i attribute it to the weaker 4.88s and maybe VSC/TRAC always stepping in, that can't be good for the gears.

idealy i want to turn the 4R into a long distance beast....

you should run some 4.88s with 32s.... would give an effective gear ratio as compared t ostock

If it were me, I'd have someone make up a comptete 3rd for me with my locker of choice (ARB) and US Gear R&P and ship it to me. In fact that is what I did last time I blew a pinon gear. I got it from ORS here: http://www.offroadsolutions.com/meetthestaff.htm

Another idea is to ship off the wounded 3rd to someone and have them replace what needs replacing the ship it back. Here is another possible place to get a good install. http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Also make sure you get a solid spacer in place of the crush sleeve.
