I replaced the front bearings on my 2nd gen this weekend. Anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this pinch?



Drivin much smoother now.

Edit: The bearing pictured is the one that is closest to the center of the vehicle on the passenger side. The outter bearing was still ok, just needed to be repacked.

 

Hard to tell from the picture but it might have run out of grease and overheated. Was the bearing burned looking?

During re-grease application to my '90 4Rnnr wheelbearing in Front, I discovered a bearing race with a small crack going THRU the entire bearing (not on the edge as your pic). I replaced all of the bearings and races on both sides (inner and outer), just because I was there. Used the FSM for the procedure (took me a long time).

NOTE I put the new races in the freezer (and put grease on them), when I installed the replacements. I believe both the race and bearing are matched sets, so you need to replace them in pairs.

 

The bearing didn't look burned at all, only zero movement at and around the bent location. I didn't want to have anything to do with the bearing or the race so I swapped em both out. Also, there was what seemed to be about 45 pounds of grease packed in throughout the hub. I swear it had the density of clay. Real fun scraping that garbage out. My front end shudders have disappeared and I'll be checking to see if I get any sort of gas mileage increase.

And to think the dealer quoted me $1200 for a job I did in about 4 hours.
