$500 fair to charge for a clutch replacement

I just replaced my friends clutch by myself in his 89 truck.Do you think if I charge him 500 bucks is fair to him and me?I want to be fair without low balling myself or over charging him.

I think that's a bit much since I had my DSM clutch done for around $400 and there's a couple places that even charge under $300 on certain vehicles. Call a dealer and ask them and then give him a deal and since it' s a friend you should give him a friend price.

is that $500 including the cost of the clutch, or just your labour? if it's inclusive... then its not too bad, toyota wanted about $1100 CAD to replace mine.

but hey, your a friend.. you should be doin it for a 6-pack kidding if you make $100-200 thats fair.. anymore and your not being the nicest friend.

I just had my clutch replaced on my 88 V6 4runner. It cost me $657, $234 in parts and $405 in labor. I think the labor charge for me was a little high. However, it was done at a shop that only works on Toyota 4x4's, so at least I know the job was done right.

From my standpoint, $500 seems fair. To make sure you might want to call around some local shops and see what they charge.

Throw in a warranty. Something like 12,000 miles with roadside assistance. That'll make the deal sound sweet.

He isn't that good of a friend.

All the shops around here are at least 900 bucks. He bought the clutch and just had me install it.

I paid $1100 at my neighbourhood garage. He's not a friend, either.
$500 sounds high and I understand that your time, tools and expertise are valuable, but $350 - 400 would be good for both parties. You get the non-taxable $$ and he gets a quallity job from an honest mechanic that he will probably bring more work to. A friend of mine re and re'ed and engine for me a while back for $500 and I'd use him again, if needed. He also let's me use his hoist, which I 'rent' from him. The rental include his tools and his expertise. We both win...not only do I get my mechcanical work done, I also learn more about my truck. And he gets the cash.

I charged him 400.That is actually for the clutch, pedal bracket, and master cylinder, which I will replace for him when he wants to do it.His pedal bracket broke in3 places, one being the upper mount under the steering column and the others in the corner behind the clutch pedal.

Labor is always free for friends...and then if they want to make a donation of their own accord, I gratefully accept. I did some stuff for a friend and he bought me a gift certificate to our favorite restaurant, earned lots of points w/ the wife for me for sure concerning wrenching!

...acquaintances get charged up front. Settle on the price up front, not after you've finished.

That Sir, is an excellent deal. As I previously posted, I paid $1100 for a clutch. Same guy charged me $300 for the bracket issue (did it crack diagonaly?) and that was just the weld. You practically gave the store away by throwing in the master cylinder. If you're ever coming to Canada, please bring your tools.

Behind the pedal cracked vertically. For now I drilled a couple of holes and pretty much clamped it to the firewall.I will replace it when he buys it.Everytime you pushed the clutch in the bracket would move with the pedal so it wouldn't work right.

Mine was diagonal, from left to right, top to bottom. Pretty common, but the part is $280 CDN and they have to shipped from the main warehouse, which had 10 on hand when I needed one. They can be welded, though.
