Question BJ Lift or crank the stock torsion bars??

Which is the better way to go about evening out a truck with newly installed Downey HD coils in the rear....keeping in mind that i dont want to install manual hubs, as Canadian winters suck, and its nice to shift into 4x4 from inside the truck.

For lowest cost, crank up the bars, and see how you like it. If the ride is too rough, pop for the ball joint spacers.

You can still have ADD (shift on the fly) and manual hubs. in the winter, lock the hubs and use ADD like normal. The rest of the year, unlock the hubs and save wear and tear on the CVs and boots.

I agree, plus it doesn't matter to your CVs how you lifted your front, either way is the same to them. BTW I've got manual hubs and ADD still intact.

Installing manual hubs is the first mod I did and I highy recommend it. Just turn them in the morning if its a bad day and your good to go. For your frontend height just crank the torsion bars an inch to even out your rid. I would prefer BJ spacers but they cost and take some work to install.

How hard are BJ Spacers to install? What supplier would you reccomend?

They are fairly easy to install, done several of them. The hardest part is trimming the upper control arms, you'll need a cut-off wheel.

As far as the hubs, they too are very straightforward... a simple swap. Warn hubs are a good, relatively inexpensive choice.

Asian hubs are cheaper, stronger and eazier to install than warn hubs, especailly on pre- 95.5 rigs. Plus no stupid allen heads to round out.

Aisin hubs are a good choice. I disagree they are measureably stronger than the new warns (and I sell Aisins). I found no difficulty installing them on several pre-95 rigs... what did you have trouble with? I have yet to round out the allens, and I have had warns on different vehicles for over 20 years.

I suggested looking at Warns for the simple reason the Aisin hubs new are more expensive, and junkyarding isn't always the easiest thing for some people.

trdparts4u.com (Toyota of Dallas) has the BJ spacer for $99 + $10 shipping. You might want to check on shipping to Canada though. That could put Roger Brown (4crawler) or Frank at SDORI (elripster) as the better choice. Besides, Frank and Roger are great assets to this board. Not to say there is anything wrong with TOD. I've personally had good dealings with them.

i am confused as to what Marc P means by "loose torsion bars" i am relitivley new to the 4runner club and slightly confused on some of the lingo. are there different ball joint spacer sizes? Are the BAll joint spacers hard on the cv boots and joints? sorry for all of the questions but i was thinking of doing the same thing.

I too have been kicking around if the idea of the BJ Spacers, especially after recently installing the Downey HD coils. Just a couple of questions:

What is the approx. height gains of the BJ spacers?
What are the differences between RB's and Toyota of Dallas'?

Mark P,

Do you sit level with your BJ spacers and Downey HD coils? How much did you have to crank down your torsion bar? Did you do low-pro bump stops?

Thanks

The front is slightly higher than the back now. After installing the spacers I loosend up the torsion until I could push up on my front wheels a little. I then took if off the rack and bounced it and adjusted the torsion bars until everything looked level. I then had a good alignment done, and it has been good since. I kept the stock bumpstops.

Here is a side view before and after comparison-
