Look how cute my twins are!

These should liven up that ol 3.4L , yea?

In the pic you see a pair of TDO4's, 4 laser cut flanges (2 head, 2 turbo inlet) weld 90's and some other misc exhaust parts. Im headed out right now to pic up a couple more 90's and some more strait sections. I will be spending a bit of time this week cutting and welding up some ghetto test manifolds to test on my engine. Im going to try to make them equal length. I still need some fuel injectors to match these though. I have already test fit the turbos and have plenty of clearence for my application

Im planning on close to 300hp with some injectors and the HUGE intercooler I will be using. What do you guys think, Is that a reasonable goal with the 5VZ-FE unopened?

I think if you are running an intercooler you have a very good shot at that type of power from the 3.4L.
Be sure to get the fuel upgrades and a piggyback controler for timing and fuel triming.

Trying to be conservative here. Im only going to run 7 psi at first. By my calculations that should be good for around 280 with the big IC and a couple other things im working on.

Very cool to see someone breaking into new territory with the 3.4.

Breaking might be the key word.

Speaking of breaking, what exactly is the weak link on the 5VZ engine? The bottom end is really strong, but I hear of thrown rods every now and then.

Besides the tranny, does anyone know what the weak link is on a properly tuned 5VZ engine producing say, 300WHP?

I have heard of the rod thing too but, the rods are strong. I think the issues with the rods were berring failures due to low oil pressures. IMO I think the engine will have head gasket issues long before anything breaks.

From what I have seen nobody throws enough fuel at the motor under heavy boost. Espescially the superchager guys who arent running intercoolers. I think problems arrise because most folks running forced induction on the 3.4L tune for what they think is a safe AFR. A motor with a compression ratio of 9.6:1 SHOULD NOT PING at only 7 psi. I have helped tune a car with a CR over 10 runs nearly that much boost with no intercooler and dosent have knock issues.

Asside from the lack of fuel (especially with the stock injectors) I see other issues that stand in the way of making power. IMHO the sparkplugs MUST be changed to a colder heat range when boost is applied. I have heard several who have superchagers mention they are on the stock plugs. This is just no good, Ill try to explain why. For example the toyota 3S-GTE engine (depending on year) runs plugs that are two steps colder than the 5VZ plugs! The 3S-GTE has a LOWER V.E. (and a CR of 8.5~8.7)than the 5VZ and so can,in therory run hotter plugs at the same boost levels and get away with it (but its two steps colder). hmmm.....

IMO toyota went with the high heat plug to make the tune up intervals longer. The ideal plug for running this engine even NA is one step colder than toyota reccomends. So when boosting at around 7psi supercharged you should be at least one step colder on the plugs if not two.

One more thing I noticed about many of the dyno graphs of superchaged VZ motors is that a lot of them are very jagged. This could mean there is a missfire occuring under heavy load. I expect that many folks are not taking into account that the plugs may have too wide a gap from the manufactuer. This is just speculation but I think its possible that the coils may not be strong enough at the stock gap for the boost levels we are seeing on the superchaged 5VZ's. I intend to check on this when I get to the dyno later this month.

I think gadget recommends 2 steps colder for high boost applications.

Sounds like I should be running one step colder then.

I would like to try that I think. I need to do some reading on the benefits of this, etc. Off the top of my head I just can't remember (unless someone wants to fill me in real quick).

I have a set of Toyota 316cc injectors that bolt and clip right in if you're interested.

You mean the benefits of a colder plug? It's about getting the heat out of the cylinder.

If there's too much heat in the cylinder, then the fuel mixture will detonate before the plug actually fires which of course is pre-ignition/knock/ping. A "colder" plug will pull heat off of the tip faster, thus creating a cooler environment for the next intake stroke, thus reducing the possibility of ping.

I went one-step colder and things got better. I found a great deal on Iridium IK20's from ebay:

It was about 3 days from the "buy it now" to the plugs showing up in the mail.

Very cool. I believe I read that URD is working on a monster too (turbo 5vz). There is also one on customtacos.com that is the guy's daily driver, so looks like it is also reliable.

Good luck!

Almost any high HP engine can be reliable if the builder knows what they're doing.

Yeup, I talked to Brian (Trager) yesterday. They're shooting for some pretty interesting numbers. It should be dern kewl to see a bolt-on kit from them!
