Quick RPM jump in 97 4Runner

I have been having problems with my RPM's kicking quickly up about 200-300, then falling back to their proper position almost immediately. It kinda feels like something is missing, but I am not really sure. It does it typically when the car is not really accelerating or under any load. Thought it may have been the MAF, but that was not the problem. I have a 97 4Runner 3.4L with auto transmission. Someone mentioned the transmission solenoids could be bad... if anyone has any input let me know. Thanks!
