Finally I get to contribute! I've got lots of mods to show, which I will gradually do... hopefully I can help somebody out, cause I know I've received a ton of help from this board. Alright I run a big stereo and in the future will run more lights etc. (I like toys).... so I had a GM 200 amp alternator that would normally go in a full size truck or SUV modifed for a Toyota plug and I used some washers for an easy custom mount. I then used a Hellroaring Technologies battery isolator coupled with Optima Red and Yellow tops to complement the whole set up. I put in an Injen intake, in which I cut a total of about 3-4" off of so as to fit the second battery in the engine compartment without having to move anything else. I upgraded all the wiring to either 1/0 or 4 awg. By the way the alternator costed me $200 and since it's in a much larger housing you could have it built much bigger yet, for a lot cheaper than a Toyota sized alternator. My wiring isn't the prettiest, but my materials are good and the connections are solid and soldered like crazy. I will consider doing a full write up if anybody is interested. I guess I more or less want to show that you CAN do dual batteries under the hood without having to fabricate anything fancy. If you have any questions let them fly, I'm sure I can help. Oh and I apologize for the dirty everything.... I've got all my skid plates off and we had some crazy icy roads which translates into salt and sand in every crevice and surface....

BTW, would the GM alternator work with the 3.0? Im pretty interested as i will be running a two amp setup for my sound system, as well as 2 sets of 150w KC Daylighters, as well as the normal power drain.

 

my 190amp toy alt isnt keeping up, so im thinking 350amp GM time.....

What GM vehicles did that alternator come in, so i know what vehicles to look for in a junk yard? Do you know if it would fit that easily on the 3VZE?

yeah not to rob my own thread but here's an example of what a 1 hour drive did to my back window.... to tell you the truth our vehicles hold up pretty darn good to the salt... i used a product you can see in my webshots, which i'll do a post of coming up, but it's $85/gallon but will pretty much make your underbody invincible to the elements.... not 100% obviously but more on that later.... i'd rather have salt though.... in South Dakota they're cheap and put down "sand".... well this sand is more like ROCK so you can guarantee paint and window chips if you live there....

He he he this is perfect! I have a '98 Runner and work for GM, so I will definitely get the generator for my Toy. I am going to run about 6 130 watt KC Hilights on my runner as soon as I get my light bar so it will definitely help out plus my winch if I could ever afford the TJM bumpers.

 

Yeah, it sounds like the type of deal I did is JUST for you. I'd would strongly recommend the Hellroaring unit... it was around $200 but it's about as good as they come. Check out their site, there are different models for different applications. I don't normally brag a company up but the quality of the product and service are unlike any I've experienced!

 

How did you "modify the plugs?"

 

The motorcraft filter for a 3.0 is the FL-793. I'm a tech at a Ford dealership i have been using them for years with no problems. 280K and still going strong.

 

can having a huge alternator effect anythign else in the truck negatively?

 

No. The alternator will generate power based on the load applied to it.
.....so no load, spins with little effort.....big load, uses some HP to turn it.

 

ANy ideas yet if this GM alternator will fit well into the 3.4??? And also if it is rated at like 200 amps, what is the MR2 alt rated at that I have seen modded often on toy trucks?

AND did this alt have the same size pulley? or is sit different, and need larger/smaller belts? Or is it a direct bolt on with the toyota belt??

 

According to the author's signature, he has a 3.4 so I'm guessing that ...yes it does work with a 3.4.
