Cut exhaust?

Cut exhaust?

Most normal people have a Muffler and than 2 or 3 feet of pipe run to the back of the truck with a tip on it. My question is...What woudl happen if you had the muffler...and no pipes leading to the back of the truck? Would it be louder?more power?legal? Thx guys...I was just wonderin. Ive seen A LOT of rigs like that

if its a truck, it is legal.. if its a 4runner, it is not legal per US DOT spec.... it will be a lot louder.. my pickup currently has a flowmaster 40 that just has a turndown after the muffler.... it does help with power output..

Im running a magnaflow 18 straight out. I just hacksawed the piping off. It was slightly louder but havent been pulled over yet. It seems to be alot more torquier.

well there is a possible issue with losing performance, if there is too little backpressure you will lose low end torque, but will have higher rpm horsepower (in a truck i really see no pint, its not like we are going to be doing 150 mph in the truck)

your right, i wont be doin 150 mph. But for rocks...Ide rather just tuck the Muffler up and Make custom skid plat for it. Then i dont have to worry about my tail pipe being DETROYED when sliding over rocks.What exhaust do you guys prefer?I dont want a ricey sound @ ALL!

i have a flowmaster 40 on my 22r and i think it sounds good... its not as deep as a v8, but it sounds nice and throaty... sounds a loud deeper and smoother than anything i have ever heard on a honda..... actually, the magnaflow i used to have on it, sounded better i think....

I smashed my pipe on a rock and then just had my pipe cut off after the muffler. however, its too loud for me, it rattles things and is just slightly annoying. one of these days I'll get around to getting the pipe re-routed.
and BTW, i felt no gain in performance, just in sound
and I have the 2.7 and its still quite loud.

I dont know about performance wise but a guy I go to school with has a Ford Ranger and he put a 6" muffler about a foot after the manifolds with no pipe coming after the muffler. It's sickenly too loud for a V6.

also jsut anotehr note, to cut it off behind the muffler is illegal (unless you are a pickup), and it can potentially let harmful exhuast gases back into the cabin...

I have a cherry bomb with a 90* downturn behind it with 2.25" piping. I like how it sounds (though at certain RPMs it does rattle stuff) but I've received a ton of compliments on it. I wish it were quieter though. I am thinking about taking the downturn out so it doesn't resonate off the ground. I will find the video of it for you...

my muffler came off in three pieces, so i cut the tube off after the cat and hammered on a section of the pipe with a 75* bend in it so it dumps right in front of the back tire. its really not that loud probably due to the restrictive v6 manifolds and stock cat. no change in power... haven't gotten pulled over. it's the most popular yota exuast mod in town!!!

Checkers (schucks kragen) for $20 Then I had meineke fab up the 2.25" exhaust and install it for another $120. All it is is a straight through glass pack.

It smells like serious butt for the first day or two as some of the coating on the muffler burns off, but afterwards its fine.

is that legal in all states? im assuming its legal on a truck due to the exhaust not being able to drift into the cab, as opposed to a 4 runner with seats still under the muffler, correct?

Correct


The US DOT standard states the exhuast must exit behind the passenger cabin, or at or behind the rear axle...

on a pickup, behind the cab is fine

on a runner the cabin is all the way back, so it then has to be either at or behind the rear axle

benefit of doing what? thats how the federal govt says where your exhuast can exit..... its supposedly a safety issue as they dont want noxiuos fumes going back into the cabin

its louder, nothing to hang up on rocks, depending on the rest of the system may or may not help performance...... i have a turndown coming off my muffler, it exits just in front of the rear axle on the left
