Question Buying advice !!!

This forum is very informative, and I've learned lot already. I'm in the process of selling my Ford diesel (which I was an avid poster on thedieselstop.com forum). I use to own a 90 4runner. One of the first 4 door. I only owned it for a little while , and I kicked myself for selling it . In another month or two I'll be buying two 4runners one for my wife and one for me.Looking at 96's to 98's (price range) in a basic question!! What things should I look out for and look for in those years of 4runners? Thanks in advance. Farmawl.

'96's had a headgasket campaign on them, but I think '97 & '98 were ok. '99 saw a minor interior redesign with better cupholders...very important for the all important drinking and driving crew.

Other than that, manual trannies will gain you one or two miles per gallon and are much peppier.

Thanks. I've seen a few 4 bangers for sell anybody know of how well the 2nd gens run vs. 1st gens w/ 4 cly. I had a 1st gen w/ a 4 and it was strong. Should I hold out for a 6 cly. Thanks

Depends on your needs. Do you want passing ability while going up hill loaded with camping gear? If so, get the 3.4.

96's and some 97's had a HG campaign. It was an external leak, if at all. All you have to do is call the dealer with the VIN and they will tell you if it has been done or not.

The early 3.4's sometimes have a leak from the waterpump area. Look for that (puddle on the ground overnight).

Other than that, there is nothing that a good used car inspection would not catch. Keep an eye on the rear axle seals too. Those are prone to leaking. The antenna mast frequently breaks (power antenna models), and the fix is significant enough for the seller to knock off at least $50, maybe more.

All in all, I am pretty happy with my 96. Try and get rear locker equipped models. They add functionality and appeal.

The headgasket problem was that covered by a dealer recall?

Yep. Take the VIN into your favorite dealer and check to see if yours was done and if it still qualifies.
