I finally got the top finished for my cargo box. Now I can easily load up with gear or let my dogs roam the back of my rig. the surface is nice and smooth/level. I cut out a hole for the sub and flush-mounted a heavy duty grille that can support a reasonable amount of weight. I leaned on it pretty good and it didn't budge so my dogs shouldn't be any problem. I ended up making it in 3 sections so that it would be easier to work with/remove when necessary. I still have to carpet it and the drawer faces, but I have to decide if I want to hinge the 3 top sections and carpet it as 1 piece (no visible seams) or leave them separate and carpet each one idividually (seams, but easier to remove).

 

Jackson thats awesome!! Nice job! I want something like that one day only set up like a bed for just little overnighter jaunts. I seen some good ideas people had for the EC4RJ 02. I'd have to take out my big huge sub box to do that though

 

That looks great! I love the concept of the separate sections. Looks pretty bulletproof. I'd say carpet them separately, then take the existing cargo carpet and use that on top. Maybe even transfer the tiedowns to the top of the box. Just a thought...

BTW - How much does it weigh?

 

Phase III will be carpeting it, and Phase IV (if I get there) will be to do something similar across the back seats (with the seats folded down). I'd try to get drawers that opened out the side rear doors and a height that would be level with what I already have finished. This will make a nice, level, wide area to load up gear. I can also put down a nice egg-crate mattress pad and make a pretty nice bed.

I'm not sure exactly what it weights, but it's a lot. I had to make it very modular so that I could remove it when necessary. The top I'd say is about 20lbs. Each drawer is probably 5-7lbs. The drawer section (without the drawers) is probably 50-75lbs. The sub/box is probably 15-20lbs, and the amp box is probably 15-20lbs. So all told, probably somewhere in the 150ish lbs.

I was going to build in the little cubby holes on either side of the drawers, but I found them to be very handy. Plus, building them in would look good, but be a waste of space. I'm going to clip a big mag light to the underside of the cover to the left of the drawers - keep it nice and handy and it won't roll around.
