Toyota RV engines: output and such
Does anyone know the difference (if any) between the regular truck/4runner engines and the R.V. engines? It would make sense to me that the engines from the R.V. would produce more torque and Hp. I have seen a few R.V.'s around for cheap. If there is an increase in output what is the difference in design and is it transferable to my 3.0

the lowest geared toyota transmission was the R151F in 4x4s with the turboed 22RE. most of the others have a 3.93 1st gear, most 2wds have a 3.83 1st
i've heard some were fitted with aftermarket RV cams, but i wouldn't hold my breath

My company built some of those teenie (and not so teenie) motorhomes on the Toyota chassis. All it was was the one ton, stretched, with a lower axle ratio. (4.10 IIRC) All were autos. They did surprisingly well for what they were. Being tall, I never cared much for them though. (Neither the standard cab legroom nor the small RV headroom and short beds...)

Funny, I spotted an early 80's Toyota rv yesterday, and that went through my mind. I cant imagine that little toy engine powering a heavy rv with aerodynamics of a barn door.
It might be sufficient in flat Florida, but I cant imaging driving that thing out west up Donner or Cabbage passes.

you could do it....at about 10 mph in first gear haha Those poor 20 and 22r engines were not really built to handle a motorhome, but companies like Dolphin made it work for them...and they were pretty popular.
Think of Uhaul! For the longest time, they used Toyota trucks and turned them into moving trucks.

They did a surprisingly good job. But the gearing is part of the key. You do not EVER need to go 90 mph, so you gear it for max power and no top speed.
