If you ran a size 35 tire on an 88 4runner, where would you mount the spare?Or would you just put it in the back?

 

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but the 35 will fit under the back of my 90, with a little coaxing. If I reverse the shackle bolts the tire will fit okay, plus rerouting the exhaust tip, and reshaping the LSV rod to make room. Then I might need to to remount the tire winch forward just a couple inches, and I'll probably make a couple little brackets to keep it from shifting and touching the springs since it will be so close... But it will fit under there and that sure will be better than taking up half the bed - worse for a 4Runner! I keep it strapped down in the bed right now.

 

hmmm...its gonna be hard to find a spot for it...ANy other ideas

 

Roof rack?

Another alternative is don't carry a 35 inch spare. Put a 31 or 33 underneath, it will fit. If you need to use it, it will get you out. If you have to drive any distance, you may need to change it to the front, but that might be better than trying to haul a 35 inside a 4Runner. I carried only the stock 225 on my 85 with 33s for 15 years and once I had to use it on the trail - for the rear! So when I got back down off the mountain to a decent spot I had to swap the small spare to the front. Extra work sure, but way better than having lived with a big tire in the back for 15 years.

 

yea, i thoght of that. But im only running a hard top in the winter months...like december march

PS. After that i'll be running no top, or a soft top on rainy days

 

Ive seen them before but do not know the name of them. They are mainly for trucks and bolt into the bed and the tire mounts up in an angle. One of those would fit in the back of a 1st gen runner.

 

Yep, if you don't want a rear seat.

 

i dunno...I have to have the rear seat in there. Maybe i would just put it in the back of the 4runner.

 

I have not seen a lot of 4runner owners that wheel their rigs take rear passengers. Maybe a shot gun passenger at most. The seats dont sit that far back anyway. I strapped my 35 into the back of my 2nd gen over the top of my foot by a foot speaker box and it didnt mess with the rear seats. But then again you have a extended cab and prolly wouldnt know much about the 4runner and its rear cargo area huh.

 

im sure you could mount the tire back there....i thinks its plenty of room...But no room for anything else. But really i dont carry anything else. So i could leave the back seat in and put the tire rack behind that. And when i go on long trips, im sure i can stuff my bags around it...

 

Do you carry passengers in the back? If not toss the baggage on the seat. Or get a roof rack that not only mounts to the hard top but also fab it up to mount on your front top and roll bar.

 

i will be carrying passengers...But when i go on trips i wont be taking 5, and when we go 4wheeling i wont have 5. SO it will work out. Thx for the help..

 

I want a rear swing out carrier fabbed ona custom tube bumper. Just my preference, as low as possible without losing ground clearance

I saw a 1st gen on slee's website with a custom rear bumper/tire carrier. looked cool. They are obviously cruiser guys, but they do have some 4runner stuff. I don't think they sell the unit as a product but they may be able to hook you up with the person who made it.

I drove and wheeled an 85 4Runner for 15 years. I kinda have an idea. I doubt a 35 will lay flat behind the rear seat, and standing up it will block your view out the back window - really not a good thing. I had someone in the back seats a lot when wheeling, I really miss that with this truck - even kids won't ride back there.
