I took the plunge this morning and did both the Silencer and Elbow removal Mods on my 2002 Runner.

I did the Elbow removal first because taking out the air filter box made the Silencer removal easier.

I did something different for the Elbow removal. Instead of just removing it I got a little creative with my Dremel tool. I wanted to avoid having to remove the wheel well components to take out the remaining part which is a major pain in the arse.
So, here is how I avoided this:


I drilled a pilot hole and cut it out with my Dremel.


This is the end result.... A nice big hole where the 90 degree bend is

So, now I just reassembeled the modified elbow. No rattles, no hassel with the fender well cover and the Dealer will never see the Mod.

And lastly I placed my stainless pipe in place of the Silencer and spliced the hoses with the brass "T" purchased from NAPA.




I did remove the EFI fuse for 15 minutes. On my 2002 4-Runner it is a yellow 20 AMP fuse.


End results are GREAT!!!!!

Even with the OEM paper air filter there is a noticable difference in acceleration And combined with my Dynomax muffler it sounds awsome.

cool...but you still can't take your truck swimmin due to the hole in your elbow...but that's a neat idea...good work

 

Didn't he hack it at a point where it will still be sucking air from the fender well area? So he should still be able to go swimming, no? I did the same thing with my elbow, which left the hole in the fender area, which is mostly or completely sealed off.

Actually I didn't cut a hole like that, I hacksawed everything, after it enters the fender, off. To be honest I liked it better w/o the elbow at all. It didn't sound like enough air was rushing in with the hacked elbow in, so I left the whole thing off. But if I plan to swim I'll put the elbow back.

The hole I cut is about the same height or level as the original opening in the fender well. So, I should be okay for any thing as deep as I have ever had to drive through.

 

Nice to see someone esle take the plunge on the ISR Mod! I hope you like it. However, I noticed in your pictures that the pipe is not the same size all the way thru. You might want to consider getting a pipe with the same diameter all the way thru.

You should also re-read the article for the new FPR Hose routing. The article has changed since it was originally written.

I saw the hose coming off the plenum on your 2000 Runner pics.

Guess what..... My 2002 doesn't have a hose coming off the plenum where yours does. Looks like something changed from 2000 to 2002. And yes, mine is a 4x4.



I'll replace the tube someday. I don't think the slight taper is going to restrict the flow too much. Anyways the improvement feels good enough for now.

 

Does anyone know why the 2002's don't have the airline coming off the plenum?????

Thanks for the excellent write-up it made this Mod a breeze

 

After discussing the Mod on my 2002 with Dr.Z, I changed things around a bit.

I no longer have the FPR hose spliced into the EVAP hose with the brass "T".

Why, because the FPR unit would get a better Engine Load Signal from the "Capped off" Tube coming out of the rear of the plenum on the 2002 engine.

Here's the Revised Mod for a 2002 4x4 4-Runner.

Step 1:

This is the FPR hose that was attached to the Air Silencer Box - Now removed and replaced with a Stainless Steel Pipe. It won't be needed so remove it.

Step 2:

Locate the "Capped Off" Steel tube coming out of the rear of the plenum. Remove the cap. You will also see a length of unused steel tube on the top of the plenum.

Step 3:

Locate the round FPR unit behind the plenum. Remove the piece of vacuum tubing that connects it to the steel pipe running under the plenum to the front. You have already removed the larger hose from the front end of this steel tube in Step 1.

Step 4:

Now you are ready to add the new Vacuum Hose to connect the unsed line coming out of the rear of the plenum to the FPR unit. I bought 2 ft of NAPA part# H-459 it cost a whole $1.25
You will need ~3.25" to connect the capped end to the steel tube. (right side in picture)

Step 5:

You will need ~11" to connect this end of the steel tube to the FPR unit.

Now, pull the EFI fuse out for a few minutes and you are done...

Total cost for the 2002 and possibly 2001 Mod done this way was $6.25 total.

$5.00 for the stainless pipe that replaced the Silencer Box and $1.25 for 2 ft of the NAPA vacuum hose (part# H-459).

Sorry Dr.Z I thought I'd just post it all at once

I took a drive down to the Rio Grande this afternoon so I could check out the performance on the long drive back uphill to the Mountains where I live.

SHEEIT!!!! My Runner had more power than ever on that uphill grade. This is my daily drive back from work so I know how my Runner performs and this is a new Beast!!!!!

I had all kinds of power to pass when I didn't before this Mod. I'm just glad there weren't any Cops around at the time.

Where did you get that SS tube ?

 

I saw the post when it was first up, but not the fix stuff for the 2002 rigs.

I can make a page for it later, and add it into the Tech area.

Now is this for 2001s too, or just 2002 engines?

 

Hey Jeff, I got it a a local muffler shop. Just call a few in your area you should be able to come up with something.

I was also curious about the aluminized steel pipe that most muffler shops carry. Would that rust in this application or would it be safe to use????

Corey, the only 2001 that we have heard of being done was a 2 wheel drive Runner which had a plastic cap on the front of the plenum. My 2002 was never drilled and tapped (see pic).


The 2000 and older models have a nipple at this site on the front of the plenum.


What we don't know yet is if the 2001's 4x4 and 4x2 have this capped tube on the rear of the plenum.

It's actually closer to a 3/16" steel tube instead of 1/8" that I labeled the pic with.

So, from what we know about Philly's Mod (2001) 2WD. Philly's 2001 2WD Mod

The 2001 models may have 2 options - to use the capped off nipple on the front of the plenum or the capped tube on the rear of the plenum.

Can someone with a 2001 Runner check this out for us??

Look Great!!

I'm going to have to take another picture to replace the last one in the write-up. It shows my first attempt using the brass Tee to connect the FPR to the EVAP hose.

It woud have been better if they were all 640x480 pics, but that will do.
I like to use the pop up windows with the 640s.

But there are not to many pics, so it looks good.
