Unhappy Terrible noise coming from my S/C 3.4, HELP!

1999 4Runner with a first Generation TRD S/C'r. Roughly 105K miles on the clock.

The truck doesn't have any other mods except the Supercharger. It runs fine, really good power across the board.

I normally run just regular octane, 87-89 octane in it. A few days ago I decided to put premium gas with an Octane booster. I don't know if it's coincidence or not but approx. a day later I was getting some chattering from the supercharger.

Now a few days have passed and it's really getting bad. The noise definitely sounds like it's coming from the supercharger. It's a kinda chattering sound. It does it at idle. Once I get it around 3-4K rpm the chattering stops.

I let the premium gas run out as much as I can and I put regular 89 octane in it today.

What can this be? Could it be pinging? I don't really know what pinging sounds like. Please help.

Thanks.
-Eddie

Sounds like the bearing in the nose of SC where the pulley is may be shot. I think that was a problem for the 1st Gen SCers. Pinging would come from the motor and would only occur when the motor was under heavy load not at idle.

How many miles do you have on the supercharger? It might be time for a rebuild of the nosedrive.

Not sure how many miles on the S/C'r. I bought the truck with the supercharger on it already.

How involved would rebuilding the nosedrive be? Is there such thing as a rebuild kit for it? How much would it be?

Thanks in advance.

Check Gadget't site for the info. He's the go to guy when it comes to superchargers. Here's the link on his site concerning the nose drive rebuild. Hope this helps.

I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyways...

Is it not a good idea to drive it like this until I get it fixed?

If I were you, I'd rather get it fix first before driving it again. But then, I don't even have a supercharger yet .
By the way, my family lives in Troy. I usually go to Fox Toyota in Rochester for parts and service.
