I feel very bad for you...

Make sure you take that Jaos guard off before you trade it in!

Sounds tempting, but about the time you break-in the '05, they'll announce the new D-4D diesels.

Better do it before you go wasting your time and money on a lift for it ...

Plus re-sales is much better within the first few years
Keep us updated on what your doing....

FirstToy and Grimace, I can't say with certainty that we'll see D-4D anything in '06, but will in the near future. The new low-sulfur fuel regs coming on line next year combined with newly developed D-CAT technology opens the door for them here. They already exist in other world markets in several series including 'Runner equivalents, and adapting them to US regs is relatively straightforward. They already meet the more stringent EU regs while producing great gobs of torque, around 300 ft. lbs. @ 1,800 rpm from 3.0 liters.

There's good info on the Toyota UK website. You have to wander around to find the Diesel stuff, but it's a glimpse of the future.

Thanks BT, that is exciting news! Thanks for sharing that.

Looks like it would be a direct swap into the 4Runner- they wouldn't have to change a thing! Turbodiesel 4Runner here we come! can't wait!

You're welcome. The one variable to watch, and it's a big one, is CARB. If they enact new, tighter regs, it'll probably sink the program at least for CA and all other states that adopted CA regs.

I asked Toyota USA about the D-4Ds and their response to my email was quote, "We have no plans to sell any diesel engines in our trucks in the near future.", or something like that..

BT17R, you're right. "Near future" probably meant '05.. Who knows about '06 and onward?!? It's anyones guess at this point..

Here's a pic of the 2.5L D-4D in an '04 Toyota Hilux pickup (This engine compartment is a dead-ringer for the '95.5-'04 Toyota Tacoma engine bay, except everything is on the wrong side.. LOL!)

D-4d

They are selling the Toyota Hilux here with that engine.. (2.5 liter version) all I've heard so far is that it's great. That engine is also in the LandCruiser 120 (the 3.0 liter version).

Good power, light and efficient. It's using the "common rail" technology.

The 3.0:
DIN HP 166/3400
NM 410/1800-2600

The 2.5:
DIN HP 102/3600
NM 260/1600-2400

Some other info here.. :
