Hey, all-

I know we have an audio specific forum, but I need the views on this thread. I've spent the last couple nights installing my new amp and components. It's taken me a while because I'm taking my time and hiding as much of the wiring as possible. The midbass speakers went in easy. The tweeters were a little more challenging. I'm not entirely satisfied with my solution. So, I'd like to see how everyone installed their tweeters using the factory location.

FWIW, my Taco didn't come with stock tweeters in the doors, so I ended up mounting mine down on the corner of the kick panels (aimed up toward the center of the rig.)

 

Factory location?

I mounted mine using 97 limited 4-runner tweeter mounts that pop in place of the mirror mount covers (minor mod, just have to drill a new hole for the clip to pop into on the Taco's)

Then I used a piece of metal 'strap' for mounting radio's to hold the aftermarket tweeter in place.

I used the stock position, mounting bracket and all.. Easy peasy.

 

I tried that, and the new tweeter was too large. It wouldn't allow me to pop the cover back in place.

I was almost tempted to cut away the plastic grille on the factory piece to make room for the new tweeter. But, I'm trying to find a less permanent alternative.

 

My aftermarket covers popped right off...Guess I was lucky.

My tweets fit in the stock location.
Have you tried shaving down the inside part of the stock speaker cover to make it fit?

What brand is the tweeter...I know some of them offer a "low-profile" grill that will allow for shallower mounting...I had to do this on my buddies rig when I was redoing his system.

I removed the bracket from the factory tweeter and attached it to my new tweet using a hot melt glue gun. My CDT tweeters came with three or four different pods that could be used to mount them. I used the lowest profile pod and it fit perfectly.

The mid bass was another story though. I made a 3/4" MDF ring and attached it to the factory plastic speaker baffle. The mounting holes for my 6 1/2" speakers didn't line up with the oversized 6 3/4" factory ones. Plus, the CDT speakers were a bit deeper than the stock speakers. I went nuts with a dremel on the back of the door panel to *almost* get them to fit correctly. I still can't snap the door panels on all the way. One of these days I'm going to redo it with a lower profile ring or try to find someone that makes an adapter that will make the whole process a lot easier.

What kind of components did you install? Where did you mount the crossover network (if they had one)?
